What Celebrities Are Mensa Members?
Mensa is the world's largest and oldest high-IQ society, accepting only individuals who score at or above the 98th percentile on a standardized, supervised intelligence test. That means taking an IQ test and landing in the top 2% of the population — approximately one in every 50 people qualifies by that standard. What surprises most people is not that the society exists, but who belongs to it. The assumption that intellectual achievement and celebrity are mutually exclusive doesn't hold up against the membership list.

What follows is an honest account of who is verifiably in Mensa, who is rumored but not confirmed, and — perhaps most importantly — who has been incorrectly credited with membership for years.

Why Verification Matters

Before naming names, I want to flag the methodological problem that makes celebrity Mensa lists unreliable in their popular form. Mensa keeps its rosters confidential and does not publish a definitive public roster. Many lists online mix confirmed members, self-reported members, and figures popularly associated with high IQ without distinguishing between those categories. The most responsible approach is to separate confirmed membership — where the individual has publicly stated it, or where Mensa itself has acknowledged them — from claims that are rumored, unverified, or actively false.

The Steve Martin episode illustrates this vividly. A 2024 New York Times crossword clue read "Elite group whose members include Steve Martin and Geena Davis," with the answer MENSA. Martin publicly corrected the record on Instagram: "Hey NYT crossword, FYI, I'm not a member of Mensa and never have been. Just a regler (sic) guy". His response is useful precisely because it demonstrates how easily unverified membership claims circulate — even appearing in major media outlets — without being checked against the individuals themselves.

Geena Davis is the most publicly and verifiably confirmed celebrity Mensan. The Academy Award-winning actress — best known for Thelma & Louise, Beetlejuice, and A League of Their Own — has been a Mensa member since the early 1990s and is listed as a Prominent Mensan on the organization's own website. Her membership was referenced by Oprah Winfrey in a 2006 interview and has been publicly acknowledged by Davis herself on multiple occasions. She holds a degree in drama from Boston University, is fluent in Swedish, placed 24th out of 300 women in the US Olympic archery trials in 1999 after taking up the sport just two years prior, and in 2007 founded the Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media — one of the largest repositories of gender and media research in the world. Her IQ has been reported at approximately 140, placing her well within the highly gifted tier. The cross-domain profile — elite athletic ability, multiple languages, academic achievement, and sustained institutional leadership — is consistent with that estimate.

Nolan Gould, best known for playing Luke Dunphy in Modern Family, publicly stated his Mensa membership as a teenager and confirmed it in multiple interviews — notable partly because of the irony: his character was the academically underachieving Dunphy sibling. Gould graduated high school at 13 years old and has spoken openly about the contrast between his on-screen persona and his actual cognitive profile.

James Woods has been reported as a Mensa member in multiple press profiles, with a widely cited IQ figure of 180 — a number that would place him in the profoundly gifted range where standard test ceilings can't reliably differentiate scores. He attended MIT on a scholarship before leaving to pursue acting, and his academic record provides genuine proxy evidence for exceptional ability, even if the specific IQ figure is unverified through any published psychometric source.

Kara Hayward, the actress known for her debut role in Wes Anderson's Moonrise Kingdom, became a Mensa member at age 9 — a fact confirmed by the organization itself when congratulating her on her achievements in 2012. Her membership is among the most specifically documented cases in the celebrity list, given that Mensa directly acknowledged it publicly.

Ashley Rickards, lead actress in MTV's Awkward, graduated high school at 15 and is a confirmed Mensa member, listed as such on her IMDB profile and confirmed through interviews. She has been active on the board of directors of charitable organizations focused on human trafficking prevention.

Alan Rachins, the actor known for L.A. Law and Dharma & Greg, is a confirmed Mensa member who left the Wharton School of Finance to pursue an acting career. He later studied screenwriting and directing at the American Film Institute. Rachins passed away in November 2024.

Chino XL, the American rapper and actor, confirmed his Mensa membership in multiple interviews, stating that it pleased him when he saw people rewarded for intelligence rather than for antisocial behavior.

Park Kyung, a member of the South Korean idol group Block B, publicly disclosed his Mensa membership, making him one of the more notable K-pop industry Mensans and a relatively rare example of a confirmed member from the Asian entertainment industry disclosing publicly.

Isaac Asimov, the science fiction author and biochemistry professor whose works include Foundation and I, Robot, is among the most intellectually credentialed Mensans in the public record — he served as vice president of Mensa International at one point and was listed on IMDB's verified Mensa member list.

Claimed But Not Confirmed — or Actively Debunked

Sharon Stone is one of the most instructive cases in the celebrity Mensa mythology. Stone maintained for years that she was a Mensa member, citing her reportedly high IQ of 154–156. In 2002, Jim Blackstone, Mensa's national marketing director, explicitly stated that Stone was not a Mensa member. Stone subsequently admitted the membership claim was false, and her additional claim of having attended a "Mensa school" was also disputed — Blackstone noted that no Mensa schools had existed since the early 1960s, and Stone was born in 1958. Blackstone was careful to add that her reported IQ would likely qualify her for membership; she simply hadn't joined. The Stone case is a useful reminder that celebrity IQ claims frequently outrun the evidence, even when the person in question appears genuinely cognitively exceptional.

Steve Martin — as documented above — is not and has never been a Mensa member, despite appearing on numerous celebrity Mensa lists and in a New York Times crossword. His own public correction is definitive.

Quentin Tarantino is frequently cited as a Mensa member or potential member across online lists. No public confirmation of actual membership from Tarantino or from Mensa exists. His prodigious film knowledge and the complexity of his screenwriting have led to the frequent inference, but inference is not membership.

Marilyn vos Savant occupies a unique position in this discussion. She is not primarily known as a celebrity in the entertainment sense but is widely known for having held the record for the highest recorded IQ score in the Guinness Book of World Records and for her long-running "Ask Marilyn" column in Parade magazine. She is associated with Mensa and has published Mensa-related material, making her one of the most publicly Mensa-adjacent figures in popular culture — though her status is as a public intellectual rather than a Hollywood celebrity.

What Mensa Membership Does and Doesn't Tell You

It's worth being direct about what membership in Mensa actually signifies, psychometrically speaking. Mensa accepts anyone scoring at or above the 98th percentile on an approved intelligence test — which corresponds to an IQ of approximately 130 or higher on most standard batteries. That threshold is the gifted range, but it is the entry point of the gifted range, not its ceiling. A Mensa member might have an IQ of 131 or an IQ of 165 — the society doesn't distinguish between members by score beyond the entry threshold.
This means that Mensa membership tells you something real — the person scored in the top 2% on a standardized test — but it doesn't tell you where within that top 2% they scored, what their cognitive profile looks like across different domains, or what they've done with their ability. The cross-domain profile, academic record, and career trajectory of someone like Geena Davis is considerably more informative about the nature and application of her cognitive ability than the Mensa membership card alone.

It also means that many cognitively exceptional people are not Mensa members, either because they never sought membership, find the organization's culture unappealing, or simply never took a qualifying test in a Mensa-approved format. Richard Feynman — one of the most brilliant physicists of the 20th century — reportedly scored a 125 on a high school IQ test and is frequently cited but not a verified Mensa member. The absence of membership doesn't imply the absence of exceptional ability.

The Takeaway

The verified celebrity Mensa list is considerably shorter than popular accounts suggest. Geena Davis, Nolan Gould, Kara Hayward, Ashley Rickards, Alan Rachins, Chino XL, James Woods, Park Kyung, and Isaac Asimov are among the most credibly documented members. Sharon Stone and Steve Martin — two of the most commonly cited names — are not members, one having been directly debunked by Mensa itself and the other having corrected the record publicly.

What the list reveals, beyond the specific names, is that cognitive ability appears across all sectors of public life — including entertainment, music, and sport — and that the cultural assumption separating intellectual achievement from creative or athletic success doesn't reflect the actual distribution of cognitive ability in the population. A 98th-percentile IQ doesn't determine what someone does with their life. What the Mensa members above share is not a career type but a cognitive threshold — and what they've chosen to build on it differs as widely as the fields they've worked in.
