A mechanical aptitude test measures how quickly you grasp basic physical principles, the behavior of levers, gears, pulleys, and fluids, usually through picture-based multiple-choice questions. The three dominant tests are Pearson's Bennett Mechanical Comprehension Test (55 items in 25 minutes), the Ramsay Mechanical Aptitude Test (36 items in 20 minutes), and the Wiesen Test of Mechanical Aptitude (60 items in 30 minutes). Employers in the skilled trades, manufacturing, and the military use them to predict how fast a candidate will learn technical work, not to test trade knowledge you already have.
What the tests actually ask
Items show everyday physical situations: two people carrying a load on a plank, gears meshing, a pulley system, water in connected containers. You choose what happens next or which arrangement works better. Ramsay's current test draws items from household objects, production and maintenance work, basic science, and hand and power tools, and the Wiesen test is written at roughly a sixth-grade reading level so that reading skill does not contaminate the measurement. Publishers are explicit about the design intent: these are tests of the ability to learn mechanical work, and no trade experience or formal physics is assumed.
Where you will encounter one
• Apprenticeships and trades hiring: Ramsay targets its test at apprentice and entry-level candidates: maintenance mechanics, millwrights, machine operators, tool setters. The Wiesen targets machine operators, electricians, construction workers, and field service technicians.
• Technical and safety-critical industries: Pearson lists maintenance, production, engineering, airlines, and emergency services among Bennett use cases, with remote unsupervised administration supported and items drawn from a randomized bank.

What mechanical aptitude has to do with intelligence
Mechanical tests sit at an interesting junction of abilities. Solving a novel pulley problem draws on fluid reasoning and on visual-spatial ability, while recognizing how everyday objects behave draws on knowledge accumulated through experience. The blend has practical value: in a classic validation study of 193 manufacturing employees, the Bennett test was the best single predictor of supervisor-rated job performance, correlating .38, and adding further tests barely improved prediction. That result echoes the broader finding, established across 85 years of research, that cognitive ability tests are among the strongest predictors of training success.
A mechanical score is still a narrower thing than an IQ. A full battery such as the RIOT IQ test (the Reasoning and Intelligence Online Test) measures spatial ability as one of six indices alongside verbal, reasoning, memory, and speed abilities. Preparing for a mechanical aptitude test
Mechanical tests reward preparation more visibly than pure reasoning tests, because part of what they measure is familiarity with physical principles that can simply be learned. The general retest literature adds that practice on any cognitive test format yields moderate score gains, so timed run-throughs of sample items are worth the hour they take.

Are mechanical tests the same as spatial tests?
They overlap but differ. Spatial tests ask you to mentally rotate or fold shapes; mechanical tests ask you to apply physical principles to depicted situations, which also draws on learned knowledge of how things work.
