A deductive reasoning test gives you a set of statements and asks what must logically follow from them. The reasoning runs from general rules to specific conclusions: in a valid deduction, if the premises are true, the conclusion cannot be false. Employers use the format as a short hiring screen; SHL's Verify Deductive Reasoning test, for example, allows 20 minutes for a maximum of 18 adaptive multiple-choice questions. Deduction: from rules to certainty
"Deduction" is reasoning in which the conclusion follows necessarily from the premises. The Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy puts it directly: in a valid deductive argument, "if the premises are true, the conclusion must be true." Deduction renders a false conclusion impossible, while induction merely renders one unlikely. That guarantee is the whole character of the test format.
The contrast with inductive tests is a difference in direction. Inductive items show you examples and ask you to discover the rule, almost always with figural patterns. Deductive items hand you the rules and ask what must follow, usually through verbal statements, syllogisms, or seating and scheduling logic. A worked example: what must be true?
SHL's official fact sheet for its deductive test includes a complete example item. You are told four things: Jane drives a red car, Susan drives a blue car, there are no red cars in Ohio, and blue cars get 33 miles per gallon of gasoline. The question asks which of the answer options must be true.
The credited answer is that Susan's car gets 33 miles per gallon. As the fact sheet explains, since blue cars get 33 miles per gallon and Susan drives a blue car, her car must get 33 miles per gallon. Every other option requires an assumption the premises never state. Notice, for instance, that the item never says where Jane lives; concluding anything about Jane and Ohio means importing outside knowledge, which is precisely the error the format is built to catch. Reading the premises literally, and only literally, is the core skill.
Where deductive reasoning tests appear
• SHL Verify Deductive Reasoning: Used for candidates applying to entry- and mid-level positions, it measures the ability to draw logical conclusions from information provided, identify strengths and weaknesses of arguments, and complete scenarios using incomplete information. Per SHL's fact sheet, it allows 20 minutes for a maximum of 18 questions in an adaptive multiple-choice format designed for unproctored administration. Tasks include reading statements and determining which options must be true or cannot be true.
• Watson-Glaser: Pearson's critical-thinking appraisal runs 40 items in a 30-to-40-minute timed sitting and covers five areas: drawing inferences, recognising assumptions, deducing, interpreting, and evaluating arguments. • Aon (formerly cut-e): Aon's Deductive-logical Thinking module (gapChallenge) gives you 6 minutes to fill the empty cell of a grid so the whole pattern obeys its rules, a sudoku-like constraint task. Its Deductive Reasoning module (switchChallenge), also 6 minutes, asks you to identify the right 4-digit sequences to produce a stated result.
Deductive modules rarely travel alone; employers typically pair them with numerical or quantitative reasoning sections inside a broader battery.
What a deductive test measures
In the Cattell-Horn-Carroll model of intelligence, deductive (sometimes called sequential) reasoning is a narrow facet of "fluid reasoning" (Gf), the broad ability to solve novel problems, sitting alongside induction. A 20-minute screen therefore samples one narrow slice of one broad ability. The RIOT IQ test (the Reasoning and Intelligence Online Test) is built on that same model and maps the wider territory with six cognitive indices: Verbal Reasoning, Fluid Reasoning, Spatial Ability, Working Memory, Processing Speed, and Reaction Time, with the Fluid Reasoning index built from Matrix Reasoning, Visual Puzzles, and Figure Weights subtests.
The reason employers bother is well documented: general cognitive ability predicts job and training performance, per Schmidt and Hunter's summary of 85 years of selection research. A 2022 reanalysis by Sackett and colleagues revised those validities downward by about .10 to .20 after correcting an overcorrection in the older method, with structured interviews ranking highest. Both findings are worth holding at once: the tests predict, more modestly than the older numbers suggested.
How to prepare for a deductive reasoning test
Practice helps. A meta-analysis of 107 samples and 134,436 participants found an adjusted average retest gain of about a quarter of a standard deviation on cognitive tests, with larger gains when practice came with coaching or the identical form was reused.
• Learn the logical vocabulary: "Must be true," "could be true," and "cannot be true" are asking three different questions; answer the one that was asked.
• Read premises literally: Resist real-world assumptions. In the SHL example, nothing says who lives in Ohio, and options that assume it are wrong.

• Rehearse the clock: SHL's format is about 20 minutes and adaptive, so drill at that pace rather than untimed.
