FastBridge is a "universal screening" and progress monitoring system that K-12 schools use to check every student's reading, math, and social-emotional behavior skills several times per year. It is published by Renaissance, which acquired FastBridge's former parent company, Illuminate Education, in 2022. FastBridge combines brief computer-adaptive tests such as aReading and aMath with short curriculum-based measures such as CBMreading, plus the SAEBRS behavior screener. It identifies students at risk of academic or behavioral difficulty. It is not an IQ test, and no FastBridge score is an intelligence score. This article covers where FastBridge came from, what each measure assesses, how schools interpret its risk levels, and how it differs from a test of cognitive ability.
Where FastBridge comes from
FastBridge began as a university research project. According to Illuminate Education's product history, Theodore J. Christ and a team of university-based researchers began work in 2005 on improving educational assessments, and the resulting cloud-based system, the Formative Assessment System for Teachers (FAST), was developed at the University of Minnesota. The university's technology licensing office describes FAST as a set of tools designed to help educators screen students, monitor progress, and analyze skills, and notes that the system was licensed exclusively to the company FastBridge Learning.
FastBridge Learning became a subsidiary of Illuminate Education in 2019. In August 2022, Renaissance, the company behind the Star assessments, acquired Illuminate Education, and FastBridge is now sold as part of the Renaissance assessment lineup. The publisher reports that FastBridge is used in roughly 15,000 schools and delivers about 34.7 million screening administrations per year.
The main FastBridge measures
FastBridge is a suite rather than a single test. The publisher groups its measures by subject, and each grade level uses a different combination. The core measures are listed below, with grade ranges and times as reported by Renaissance and the National Center on Intensive Intervention.
• aReading: a "computer-adaptive test" of broad reading for kindergarten through grade 12, meaning the software adjusts item difficulty as the student answers. It samples concepts of print, phonological awareness, phonics, vocabulary, and comprehension, and takes roughly 15 to 40 minutes (the National Center on Intensive Intervention lists about 23 minutes per student).
• earlyReading: a set of 13 brief subtests for pre-K through grade 1 covering early literacy skills, each taking about one to four minutes. Schools typically give a recommended group of four subtests during each screening window.
• CBMreading: a classic oral reading fluency measure for grades 1 through 8. The student reads a grade-level passage aloud for about one to three minutes while the teacher scores accuracy and speed.
• aMath: a computer-adaptive screener of broad mathematics for kindergarten through grade 12, taking about 20 to 30 minutes. The publisher reports it can produce an accurate overall score with as few as 25 items.
• earlyMath: brief numeracy subtests for kindergarten and grade 1 (also usable in pre-K and with older at-risk students), each about one to four minutes, covering number, relations, and operations.
• CBMmath measures: short skill probes, including CBMmath Automaticity for arithmetic fluency (grades 1-12, about 4 minutes), CBMmath Process for written procedures (grades 2-6), and CBMmath Concepts and Applications (grades K-8).
• SAEBRS: the "Social, Academic, and Emotional Behavior Risk Screener," a norm-referenced teacher rating scale for grades K-12 that takes one to three minutes per student and yields social, academic, and emotional behavior subscales. A student self-report version, mySAEBRS, is available for grades 2 through 12.
Adaptive tests and curriculum-based measures work differently
The two testing formats inside FastBridge answer different questions. The adaptive measures, aReading and aMath, work like other adaptive screeners such as the NWEA MAP test: every student starts near grade-level difficulty, and the algorithm serves harder or easier items based on responses. This produces an efficient estimate of a student's overall skill level on a vertical scale that spans many grades, which is useful for fall, winter, and spring benchmarking.
The "curriculum-based measurement" tools, such as CBMreading and the CBMmath probes, are very short standardized samples of one specific skill, timed in minutes. Because they come in many equivalent forms, teachers can repeat them weekly or biweekly with students receiving interventions and graph the results. That frequent, sensitive-to-growth measurement is something a long adaptive test cannot do practically, which is why FastBridge pairs the two formats.
Benchmark periods, risk levels, and MTSS
Renaissance recommends universal screening three times per year, in fall, winter, and spring windows. Districts such as Kansas's Unified School District 232 describe screening all students in grades K-9 during these three windows and using the results to sort instructional support into tiers.
FastBridge reports compare each student's score with national norms and assign a risk label. In the default setup documented in district interpretation guides such as Blue Valley Schools', scores at or above the 40th percentile are labeled "low risk," scores between the 15th and 39th percentiles are "some risk," and scores below the 15th percentile are "high risk." These labels feed a "multi-tiered system of supports" (MTSS), the framework many schools use for the process once called RTI, or response to intervention. Low-risk students continue with core classroom instruction (Tier 1), some-risk students may receive small-group intervention (Tier 2), and high-risk students are candidates for intensive intervention (Tier 3), with progress monitored through the brief CBM measures.
It helps to remember what a risk label is: a probability statement about future performance, based on a short test given on one day. Screening scores contain measurement error, and a label describes a score rather than a child. Districts are expected to combine screening data with classroom evidence before changing a student's instruction.
Is FastBridge an IQ test?
No. FastBridge is a screener of academic skills and behavior risk. IQ tests are designed to measure general cognitive ability through reasoning, memory, spatial, and knowledge tasks, and they report scores on a normed scale with a mean of 100 and a standard deviation of 15. FastBridge instead measures how well a student currently reads and does math relative to grade-level peers, plus teacher-rated behavior. Those are outcomes that schooling directly teaches, so a low FastBridge score can reflect many things besides ability, including missed instruction, attendance, a new language of instruction, or a skill gap that intervention can close quickly.
Reading and math achievement do correlate with cognitive ability, which is one reason screening works at all. But no FastBridge measure is built or normed to estimate intelligence, and treating a percentile on aReading as an IQ would be a misuse of the score. Schools that need cognitive ability information use different instruments entirely, a topic covered in the related article on whether schools test for IQ.
Strengths and limitations
FastBridge has genuine strengths as a screening system, along with limits worth naming.
• Strength, efficiency: most measures take minutes, and the adaptive tests shorten testing time substantially compared with fixed-form assessments, so schools can screen everyone three times per year without losing days of instruction.
• Strength, technical evidence: the National Center on Intensive Intervention's independent tools chart rates aReading's reliability as backed by convincing evidence for grades K-8, with convincing classification accuracy evidence in grades 2-8.
• Strength, breadth: it screens behavior as well as academics. SAEBRS has a peer-reviewed research base, including cut-score studies published in School Psychology Quarterly.
• Limitation, screening is not diagnosis: FastBridge flags risk. It does not diagnose dyslexia, a learning disability, ADHD, or an emotional disorder, and decisions about special education require comprehensive individual evaluation.
• Limitation, probabilistic cut points: the 15th and 40th percentile thresholds are defaults, and students near a cut line can change categories on retesting simply from measurement error.
• Limitation, rating-scale subjectivity: SAEBRS depends on teacher judgment, and different raters can score the same child differently.
• Limitation, no ability measurement: FastBridge tells a school where a student's skills are today, and says nothing direct about cognitive ability or potential.
Frequently asked questions
Is FastBridge an IQ test?
No. FastBridge screens reading, math, and social-emotional behavior to flag students who may need extra support. It does not measure general cognitive ability and produces no IQ score.
What grades take FastBridge?
Measures span pre-K through grade 12. earlyReading and earlyMath cover roughly pre-K to grade 1, CBMreading covers grades 1-8, and aReading, aMath, and SAEBRS extend from kindergarten through grade 12.
How often do students take FastBridge?
Schools typically screen all students three times per year, in fall, winter, and spring. Students receiving interventions may also complete brief progress monitoring probes as often as weekly.
What do FastBridge risk levels mean?
By default, scores at or above the 40th national percentile are low risk, scores between the 15th and 39th percentiles are some risk, and scores below the 15th percentile are high risk for future academic difficulty.
What is SAEBRS?
SAEBRS stands for Social, Academic, and Emotional Behavior Risk Screener. It is a one-to-three-minute teacher rating scale, used in grades K-12, that screens for social, academic, and emotional behavior risk. A student self-report version, mySAEBRS, exists for grades 2-12.
Should my child prepare for FastBridge?
No preparation is intended. FastBridge works best as a snapshot of current skills, and coaching for it would defeat the purpose of accurate screening.
Screening scores and ability scores answer different questions
FastBridge answers a school's question: which students need extra help with reading, math, or behavior right now? An intelligence test answers a different one: how strong is a person's general reasoning ability compared with age peers? If the second question is the one you care about, you need an assessment normed for it. The RIOT IQ test (the Reasoning and Intelligence Online Test), developed by RIOT IQ with psychometrician Dr. Russell T. Warne, measures adult (18+) cognitive ability with 15 subtests across six cognitive indices, including verbal reasoning, fluid reasoning, spatial ability, working memory, processing speed, and reaction time. It takes about 52 minutes and reports scores on the familiar mean-100, standard-deviation-15 scale, though like any online measure it does not replace an individually administered diagnostic evaluation.
