What Is the DAS-II Test? The Differential Ability Scales Explained

The DAS-II test (the Differential Ability Scales, Second Edition) is an individually administered cognitive assessment for children and adolescents aged 2 years 6 months through 17 years 11 months. A psychologist or other trained examiner gives it one-on-one, and its headline result is the "General Conceptual Ability" score, or GCA, a composite that functions much like an IQ score, with an average of 100 and a "standard deviation" (a measure of how spread out scores are) of 15 points. The DAS-II was written by Colin D. Elliott and published by Pearson in 2007, with a normative update of the School-Age battery released in 2023. This article explains how the test is organized, what the GCA does and does not include, how the DAS-II differs from the WISC-V, and what options exist for adults, since the DAS-II stops at age 17.

The DAS-II is a school-psychology workhorse. Examiners use it to profile a child's cognitive strengths and needs, support special education eligibility decisions, help develop "IEP" (Individualized Education Program) goals, and monitor progress over time. Pearson lists it at qualification level C, which means administration requires graduate-level or professional training in psychological assessment. Parents cannot buy it, and it is never given as an online quiz.

The age range runs from 2:6 to 17:11 (test manuals write ages as years:months, so 2:6 means 2 years, 6 months). Within that range, the DAS-II shows up in several common situations.

• Special education evaluations: profile analysis across subtests helps teams identify learning problems and plan interventions.

• Gifted identification: the test's reasoning-focused composite makes it a frequent choice in gifted assessment, and Pearson notes that gifted students with unique backgrounds can be assessed using its verbal, nonverbal reasoning, and spatial subtests. Our guide to how gifted testing works covers that process in detail.

• Special populations: the kit includes standardized American Sign Language administration directions for deaf and hard-of-hearing children, and an Early Years Spanish Supplement covers all subtests for ages 2:6 to 6:11. A "Special Nonverbal Composite" (SNC), available from age 3:6, allows an overall score built only from nonverbal subtests when language is a barrier.

---

The DAS-II contains 20 subtests organized into two overlapping batteries. The Early Years battery is typically used for ages 2:6 through 6:11, and the School-Age battery for ages 7:0 through 17:11. The two batteries were normed together for children aged 5:0 through 8:11, which lets an examiner test "out of level": a bright six-year-old can take School-Age subtests, and an older child who is struggling can take Early Years materials, with valid norms either way.

Every subtest is classified as either core or diagnostic, and this split is the test's defining design decision.

• Core subtests: six subtests (at most ages) that measure verbal, nonverbal reasoning, and spatial abilities. Only these feed the GCA and the three main cluster scores: Verbal Ability, Nonverbal Reasoning Ability, and Spatial Ability.

• Diagnostic subtests: optional measures of working memory, processing speed, and early school readiness. They produce their own cluster scores and enrich the profile, and they stay out of the GCA entirely.

Individual subtests are reported as "T scores" (mean 50, standard deviation 10), while the GCA, SNC, and clusters are standard scores on the familiar 100/15 scale, with a possible range of 30 to 170. Administering the core battery takes about 45 to 60 minutes, with roughly 30 more minutes for diagnostic subtests.

The GCA is the DAS-II's answer to an IQ score, though the test deliberately avoids the term. Elliott defined it as a measure of "psychometric g," the general ability to perform complex mental processing involving conceptualization and transformation of information. In plain language, it summarizes how well a child reasons with words, patterns, and space.

The distinctive choice is what gets left out. Because working memory and processing speed subtests carry lower "g loadings" (weaker correlations with general ability) than reasoning subtests, the DAS-II keeps them diagnostic, so the GCA is built only from the most g-saturated tasks. The practical result is a composite that is somewhat purer as a reasoning measure than a traditional full-scale IQ, which typically folds memory and speed into the total.

Psychometrically, the GCA holds up well. Its internal-consistency reliability runs from .94 to .96 across battery levels, and it correlates .84 with the WISC-IV Full Scale IQ and .87 with the WPPSI-III Full Scale IQ, which is about as high as major batteries correlate with one another. It also predicts academic achievement: correlations with total achievement on the WIAT-II ranged from .79 to .82 in the validity studies. So while a GCA is technically a different score from an IQ, in practice it can be interpreted on the same scale and carries the same kind of predictive information. As with any test score, a GCA is an estimate with a confidence interval around it, and labels describe scores rather than children.

The Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children, Fifth Edition (WISC-V, published 2014) is the other major individually administered children's test, and the two overlap heavily in purpose. We profile it fully in our article on the WISC test. The main differences are practical.

• Age range: the DAS-II covers 2:6 to 17:11 with one instrument; the WISC-V covers 6:0 to 16:11, with the WPPSI series used for younger children and the WAIS for ages 17 and up.

• What the composite includes: the WISC-V Full Scale IQ is derived from seven subtests, including Digit Span (working memory) and Coding (processing speed). The DAS-II GCA excludes memory and speed by design, so the two composites can diverge for a child whose reasoning and processing abilities differ sharply.

• Score architecture: the WISC-V reports five primary index scores (Verbal Comprehension, Visual Spatial, Fluid Reasoning, Working Memory, Processing Speed); the DAS-II reports three core clusters plus optional diagnostic clusters.

• Vocabulary: the WISC-V calls its result an IQ; the DAS-II calls its result a GCA. Both sit on the mean-100, SD-15 scale.

Neither test is simply better. Evaluators often prefer the DAS-II for young children, for examinees who need a nonverbal route to a composite, or when a reasoning-pure summary score is wanted, and the WISC-V where its five-index model or its wider ecosystem of linked measures is more useful.

The DAS-II ceilings out at 17:11, so it is never the right instrument for an adult. Adults seeking a professional evaluation are typically given the WAIS by a psychologist, usually when there is a clinical question such as a disability evaluation. For self-knowledge rather than diagnosis, a well-built online test is the realistic path, and our guide to taking an IQ test as an adult explains what separates a real test from an entertainment quiz.

The same design questions raised in this article apply directly. The Reasoning and Intelligence Online Test, the RIOT IQ test, is an online IQ test for adults aged 18 and older built on the Cattell-Horn-Carroll model, with 15 subtests across six indices (verbal reasoning, fluid reasoning, spatial ability, working memory, processing speed, and reaction time), norms based on US-born native English speakers, and a reported margin of error of about 3.7 IQ points for the full version. Like the DAS-II, it reports both an overall score and ability-level profiles; unlike the DAS-II, it takes about 52 minutes in a browser with no examiner present. Anyone who aged past the school-testing pipeline and still wants a rigorous number can take the RIOT IQ test at riotiq.com.

Functionally, yes. Its General Conceptual Ability score sits on the same mean-100, SD-15 scale as IQ and correlates .84 with the WISC-IV Full Scale IQ. The publisher avoids the label "IQ" to emphasize the test's focus on specific abilities.

Ages 2 years 6 months through 17 years 11 months. The Early Years battery is usually used through age 6:11 and the School-Age battery from 7:0, with a normed overlap from 5:0 to 8:11.

The core battery takes about 45 to 60 minutes, and optional diagnostic subtests add roughly 30 minutes.

It is a qualification level C instrument, meaning examiners need graduate-level or professional training in psychological assessment. School psychologists are the most common users.

No. The norms end at 17:11. Adults who want a professionally interpretable score can pursue a WAIS evaluation through a psychologist or take a normed online instrument such as the RIOT IQ test.
