The SAGES-3, short for the Screening Assessment for Gifted Elementary and Middle School Students, Third Edition, is a "norm-referenced" screening test (one that compares a student's performance to a national sample) that schools use to find students who may be gifted or talented. Published by PRO-ED and authored by Susan K. Johnsen and Anne L. Corn, it covers ages 5 years 0 months through 14 years 11 months, roughly kindergarten through eighth grade. What the SAGES-3 measures
According to PRO-ED, the SAGES-3 comes in two levels: the SAGES-3: K–3 for students in kindergarten through third grade, and the SAGES-3: 4–8 for students in fourth through eighth grade. Each level contains the same four subtests, and each subtest takes about 15 to 30 minutes.
• Nonverbal Reasoning: The student solves picture and figure analogies, identifying relationships among shapes and images. Because the content is not taught in school, this subtest samples the ability to perceive new relationships rather than learned knowledge.
• Language Arts/Social Studies: A multiple-choice achievement subtest drawing on reading, spelling, literature, composition, and social studies content aligned with national standards.
• Verbal Reasoning: The student solves word analogies, deducing relationships between pairs of words such as synonyms, categories, functions, and cause and effect. Items are read aloud to students in kindergarten through third grade. This subtest is new in the third edition, added so the test samples more than one aspect of reasoning.
• Mathematics/Science: A multiple-choice achievement subtest covering ideas and basic concepts in mathematics and science.
The four subtests combine into three composite scores. The two reasoning subtests form the Reasoning Ability composite, the two achievement subtests form the Academic Ability composite, and all four together form the General Ability composite. This structure reflects the test's dual purpose: it screens for both general intellectual ability and academic aptitude, so a student whose strength lies in abstract reasoning and a student whose strength lies in accumulated academic knowledge can both surface in the screening.
Scores, norms, and reliability
SAGES-3 subtests and composites are reported as "index scores," standard scores set to a mean of 100 with a "standard deviation" (a measure of how spread out scores are) of 15, the same scale used by most IQ tests. Each score also comes with a percentile rank; an index of 115 sits at about the 84th percentile, for example. Tables in the Examiner's Manual convert raw scores to these normed scores, and PRO-ED includes an online scoring and report system with the test kit.
The publisher reports that the third edition's normative data were collected from 2015 to 2017 from 1,834 students, with the sample stratified by age relative to geography, gender, race, ethnicity, household income, and parent education to match 2017 U.S. Census projections. Average "coefficient alpha" reliability (a measure of internal consistency) ranges from .81 to .96 for the subtests and from .91 to .98 for the composites.
One historical note is worth knowing. Earlier editions of the SAGES were distinctive for providing norms based on identified gifted students alongside general norms, a feature reviewers singled out; a 1993 review in Roeper Review commended the original SAGES and its primary-grades version for their provision of gifted norms. The third edition takes a different approach. It uses a single nationally representative normative sample and instead reports "diagnostic accuracy" studies, which test how well the screener separates students with IQs of 130 or higher from students below that line. PRO-ED reports that a General Ability cutoff of 126 on the K–3 level correctly flagged 74 percent of high-IQ students ("sensitivity") while correctly passing over 96 percent of others ("specificity"), and a cutoff of 120 on the 4–8 level yielded sensitivity of .80 and specificity of .88. Those figures are strong for a group screener, though they also show that no cutoff catches every gifted student.
How schools use the SAGES-3
The SAGES-3 is built for exactly the situation most districts face: hundreds of students, limited psychologist time, and a gifted program with far fewer seats than applicants. It can be administered to groups or individuals by examiners who meet PRO-ED's Level B qualification, which typically includes teachers and other school personnel with training in assessment, so a district can screen an entire grade without booking one-on-one time with a school psychologist.
The Examiner's Manual, as summarized in district materials such as those published by Bergenfield Public Schools in New Jersey, lists four principal uses: identifying students who are gifted and talented in intellectual and academic ability, screening entire pools of students for possible inclusion in gifted programs, examining students' relative strengths and weaknesses in reasoning and academic abilities, and serving as a research measure. In practice, the second use dominates. Many districts administer the SAGES-3 to all students at a target grade level, then invite those above a chosen cutoff to a fuller evaluation.
Screening is not the same as identification
A screener's job is to narrow the pool, and it is worth understanding what that does and does not mean for your child. A strong SAGES-3 score typically moves a student forward to a "comprehensive evaluation," which may include an individually administered intelligence test, achievement testing, teacher rating scales, portfolios, and interviews. A score below the cutoff usually ends the process for that testing cycle, though most districts allow re-screening in later years.
Because screening cutoffs trade convenience for precision, sensible programs treat the SAGES-3 as one gate rather than a verdict. The publisher's own accuracy figures imply that a meaningful minority of genuinely high-ability students will score under any single cutoff on any single day. How the SAGES-3 compares with the CogAT
The most common alternative districts consider is the Cognitive Abilities Test, and the two instruments overlap enough that the SAGES-3 Examiner's Manual used the CogAT as one of its "criterion" tests (established measures a new test is validated against), alongside instruments such as the WPPSI-IV and the Woodcock-Johnson IV achievement battery. Both are group-administered, both produce verbal and nonverbal reasoning scores, and both feed gifted-program decisions.
The main difference is scope. The CogAT is a pure reasoning battery with verbal, quantitative, and nonverbal sections, while the SAGES-3 mixes two reasoning subtests with two achievement subtests. A district using the SAGES-3 gets an aptitude signal and an academic signal from one sitting; a district using the CogAT typically pairs it with a separate achievement test if it wants both. The SAGES-3 is also narrower in mission: it exists specifically to screen for gifted programs, whereas the CogAT serves broader ability-profiling purposes as well. Neither group test replaces an individually administered IQ test when a precise score is needed for identification or for questions like twice-exceptionality.
Getting a trustworthy measure of reasoning ability
For school-age gifted screening, the SAGES-3 does its intended job: it is a reliable, well-normed way to decide who gets a closer look. Adults who want a rigorous picture of their own cognitive abilities need a different tool, since the SAGES-3 stops at age 14.
