An abstract reasoning test presents shapes, symbols, and patterns, then asks one question in many forms: what rule generates what you see? Because the items use no words and no numbers, the test measures raw rule-finding ability, which is why psychologists treat abstract reasoning as the purest widely used marker of "fluid intelligence," the capacity to solve novel problems. You will meet these items in IQ tests, in employer screeners from publishers like SHL, and in admissions testing, almost always in the form of matrices, figure series, or odd-one-out puzzles.
What abstract reasoning tests look like
• Matrix completion: A grid of figures follows one or more rules, with one cell missing. The classic example is Raven's Progressive Matrices, which Pearson describes as "a non-verbal estimate of abstract reasoning or fluid intelligence." • Figure series: A sequence of shapes changes step by step, and you choose what comes next, the same logic as a number series without the numbers.
• Odd one out: Several figures share a rule; one breaks it. Spotting which one requires inducing the rule first.
In employer testing, SHL's current inductive reasoning assessment runs a maximum of 15 questions in 18 minutes, adapts to your answers, and describes itself as measuring "the ability to infer rules, patterns, or sequences." Why these puzzles measure intelligence
In the standard model of intelligence, fluid intelligence is the ability to reason through problems you have never seen, independent of schooling, a construct formalized by Raymond Cattell in 1963. Matrix-style tests are its canonical measure, and rank among the most "g-loaded" tests ever built, meaning performance on them tracks overall cognitive ability unusually well. A landmark 1990 analysis in Psychological Review traced what the Raven test actually demands: inducing abstract relations while juggling goals in working memory, which is close to a definition of thinking itself.

Can you practice abstract reasoning?
Yes, within limits, and the evidence here is unusually good. A meta-analysis of 107 samples covering more than 134,000 people found that simply retaking cognitive tests raises scores by about a quarter of a standard deviation, with roughly half a standard deviation by a third attempt, and larger gains when the same form is reused. A 2018 meta-analysis in Intelligence found much the same pattern. The gains mostly reflect familiarity with item types rather than growth in the underlying ability.
Institutions have noticed. The UCAT, the admissions test for UK medical schools, dropped its Abstract Reasoning section in 2025, citing lower predictive validity than its other sections and "high coachability." Test publishers push back with engineering: Pearson's current Raven's edition assembles each digital administration from an item bank specifically to limit practice effects.
Abstract vs. spatial vs. logical reasoning
The three terms blur together in prep materials, but testing frameworks separate them. Abstract reasoning infers rules from figural patterns. Spatial ability mentally transforms objects, rotating and folding them. Logical or deductive reasoning applies stated rules to reach certain conclusions. A well-built battery measures them separately; the RIOT, for instance, keeps its Fluid Reasoning index distinct from its Spatial Ability index precisely because the two can diverge in one person.
Frequently asked questions
Are abstract reasoning tests culture-fair?
Fairer than word-heavy tests, but not culture-free. Pearson claims only that its matrices "minimize" language and cultural impacts, and researchers continue to debate how much test-taking familiarity still matters.
Why do employers use abstract reasoning tests?
Because rule induction predicts how quickly people learn novel work, and figural items can be administered to candidates from any educational background in a few minutes.
What is the best way to prepare?
Work through practice matrices until the common rule types (progression, addition, rotation, distribution) are familiar, and time yourself. Format familiarity is where the documented score gains come from.
Is abstract reasoning the same as IQ?
It is one strong component. Abstract items estimate fluid reasoning specifically; a full IQ score also draws on verbal, spatial, memory, and speed abilities.
