• Form constancy: the examinee finds a match for the target figure even though the correct answer may be larger, smaller, rotated, or embedded within a larger design.
• Sequential memory: a sequence of elements is shown for five seconds, then the examinee must identify the identical sequence among four choices.
• Figure-ground: the examinee locates a target figure hidden within one of four complex, visually cluttered designs.
• Visual closure: the examinee matches an incomplete target figure to the option showing its correctly completed form, which requires mentally filling in the missing parts.
Administration is untimed and individual, and the whole test takes about 25 minutes.
Why the motor-free format matters
The most distinctive feature of the TVPS-4 is that it is "motor-free": no subtest asks the examinee to draw, trace, or copy anything. This matters because many classic visual tasks confound perception with hand control. Scoring the TVPS-4 is straightforward. Each subtest yields a raw score that is converted to a "scaled score," a norm-based score that compares the examinee with age peers, along with a "percentile rank," the percentage of same-age peers scoring at or below that level. The seven subtests combine into an overall total, which the publisher reports as a "standard score" on the familiar scale where 100 is average, together with an overall percentile rank. As with any standardized test, a single administration carries measurement error, and scores near a cutoff should be interpreted cautiously rather than treated as fixed labels.
