The HireVue assessment is an employer screening platform that combines on-demand video interviews, scored by AI against job-related criteria, with game-based psychometric tests, job simulations, coding challenges, and language tests. By the company's own 2025 figures it has hosted more than 40 million video interviews and 200 million assessments for over 1,100 customers. It is also the most scrutinized product in AI hiring, and the single most important fact for candidates is often a surprise: HireVue no longer analyzes your face, and by its current statement its AI scores only what you say. This article explains what candidates experience, how the scoring works, and what changed after the controversy.
What candidates actually experience
A typical HireVue invitation asks you to record answers to structured interview questions on your webcam, on your own schedule; the company reports 42 percent of interviews are completed outside business hours, and its video assessments are pitched as taking under 20 minutes. Depending on the employer, the process may add game-based psychometric tests, a "Virtual Job Tryout" simulation, coding assessments, or language tests. Whether you can re-record an answer is configured by the employer, and a submitted answer cannot be revisited, so treat every recording as final. The genre is close to other gamified screeners like Pymetrics and online aptitude platforms like cut-e.
How the AI scoring works now
HireVue's current, publicly documented pipeline has three steps: your spoken answers are transcribed by a third-party speech-to-text system (Rev.ai), the transcript is evaluated with natural language processing, and responses are scored by models built on "expert human rater evaluations of answers to similar competency-based interview questions." The company's 2025 AI Explainability Statement is unambiguous about what is excluded: "our AI relies only on what is said by the candidate and does not use any video analysis or other audio characteristics," meaning no facial expressions, body language, background, or tone of voice.
The facial-analysis controversy, and what changed
It was not always so. HireVue's earlier assessments included analysis of facial movements, which drew a complaint to the Federal Trade Commission from a privacy advocacy group in 2019 and broad press scrutiny. The company removed facial analysis from new assessments in March 2020 and announced the change publicly in January 2021, saying internal research showed visual signals "no longer significantly added value" as language analysis improved. It also commissioned an external algorithmic audit and has published annual AI explainability statements since. Whatever one concludes about the episode, it is the clearest case study available of public pressure changing how an AI hiring tool works.
Is the HireVue assessment a cognitive test?
Partly. The game-based components sample cognitive abilities, and the structured-interview format has real science behind it: in Sackett and colleagues' 2022 re-analysis of selection methods, structured interviews sit at the top of the validity rankings, alongside the long-established predictive power of general cognitive ability. The open question researchers still debate is whether AI scoring of transcripts preserves the validity of a well-run structured interview, which is exactly why audits and explainability statements matter. For the candidate, one practical difference stands out: HireVue reports to the employer, and you typically never see your scores. A normed test works the other way. The Reasoning and Intelligence Online Test from RIOT IQ reports your own six-index cognitive profile to you, and you can take a free IQ test before your next screening to know what you bring.
Frequently asked questions
Does HireVue analyze your face?
Not anymore. Facial analysis was dropped from new assessments in March 2020, and the company's current statement says its AI uses only what you say, not expressions, body language, or tone.
How long does a HireVue interview take?
The company pitches video assessments as under 20 minutes, though the exact length depends on how the employer configures it.
Can you redo an answer on HireVue?
Re-record rules are set by the employer, and a submitted answer is final. Full restarts are typically granted only for verified technical failures.
How is a HireVue interview scored?
Speech is transcribed, the transcript is analyzed with natural language processing, and models trained on expert human ratings score the answers against job-related criteria.
Do candidates see their HireVue scores?
Generally no. Results go to the employer. That is a structural difference from normed tests, which report a profile to the test-taker.
