The GRADE assessment, short for Group Reading Assessment and Diagnostic Evaluation, is a paper-and-pencil diagnostic reading test that a classroom teacher can give to an entire class at once. Authored by school psychologist Dr. Kathleen T. Williams and first published in 2001 by American Guidance Service (later part of Pearson), it measures reading development from prekindergarten through adulthood across eleven overlapping test levels. Its purpose is to show which component reading skills a student has mastered and which ones need instruction, and its publisher paired every item with follow-up teaching activities. Pearson discontinued the GRADE in July 2024, but many schools still hold test kits, score reports, and years of GRADE data, so understanding the test remains useful. This article explains what the GRADE measures, how its levels and scores work, who used it, and how it differs from individually administered reading diagnostics.
What the GRADE assessment measures
According to Pearson's product listing, the GRADE measures reading competency in six core areas: word reading, sentence comprehension, word meaning, passage comprehension, vocabulary, and listening comprehension. Rather than producing a single reading score and stopping there, the test breaks reading into "component skills," the separately measurable abilities that combine to produce fluent comprehension.
The specific subtests a student takes depend on the test level, because the skills that matter for a prekindergartner differ from those that matter for a high schooler. The original publisher's level overview described the progression this way:
• Pre-reading and readiness skills: at Level P, young children who cannot yet read print work through orally and visually presented items covering "phonological awareness" (sensitivity to the sounds inside spoken words, such as rhymes and beginning sounds), visual matching skills, and basic concepts.
• Early literacy and decoding: at Level K, subtests add print awareness, letter recognition, phoneme-grapheme knowledge (connecting sounds to letters), and early word reading.
• Word knowledge: from Level 1 upward, students read words and demonstrate word meaning; from Level 3 upward this becomes a vocabulary subtest in which students select synonyms for a target word.
• Comprehension: sentence comprehension and passage comprehension subtests run from Level 1 through the adult level, and together they form the Total Comprehension composite.
• Oral language: a listening comprehension subtest appears at every level, letting teachers compare what a student understands through the ear with what the same student understands through print. A large gap between the two often signals a decoding problem rather than a language problem.
A 2021 study in the Journal of Learning Disabilities led by Nathan Clemens described the GRADE comprehension measures as untimed, group-administered subtests, and reported internal consistency reliability in the .86 to .88 range for the vocabulary subtest in grades 6 through 8, based on the test's technical data. The same source reported lower reliability, from .63 to .81, for listening comprehension at those grades, a reminder that not every subtest score deserves equal confidence.
Eleven levels, parallel forms, and group administration
The GRADE spans a wider range than most group reading tests. The original publisher's materials state that the test has eleven levels, each with two parallel forms carrying both fall and spring norms. Levels P and K serve prekindergarten and kindergarten, Levels 1 through 6 track the elementary grades, and Levels M, H, and A serve middle school, high school, and postsecondary or adult examinees. A later online edition, GRADE Online, covered grades 2 through 12 plus adults.
Group administration is the test's defining feature. The publisher's guidance stated that the GRADE can be given by a regular classroom teacher without special training, to anything from a single student to a large group, in roughly 50 to 90 minutes. The parallel forms allow fall and spring testing without students seeing the same items twice, which supports growth measurement across a school year.
The level system also permits "out-of-level" testing. Because the norms for each level typically extend from one grade below to two grades above the target grade, a struggling seventh grader can take a lower level and still receive interpretable norm-referenced scores. The levels were linked during norming, so scores remain comparable as a student moves up through the series.
Scores, reports, and the diagnostic analysis
Pearson's listing reports that the GRADE yields stanines, percentiles, grade equivalents, age equivalents, standard scores, normal curve equivalents, and "growth scale values," a developmental scale that tracks absolute growth in reading skill over time the way a height chart tracks physical growth. Norms are grade-based, with separate fall and spring norm sets.
The reporting system was built for classrooms rather than clinics. The publisher offered four group reports and four individual student reports, including a diagnostic analysis that breaks performance down subtest by subtest and item by item. The original score-report documentation described its purpose plainly: identify the strengths and weaknesses in the reading skills of a student or an entire class, then use that detail to plan intervention activities.
This diagnostic-to-instruction link was the GRADE's main selling point. The GRADE Resource Library, a companion collection keyed to every GRADE item, supplied activities, worksheets, and book lists matched to the specific skills a student missed. A teacher could move from a low phonological awareness score to ready-made phonological awareness lessons without designing materials from scratch.
Who used the GRADE, and for what
The EdInstruments database maintained by the Annenberg Institute at Brown University lists the GRADE as a whole-class measure for prekindergarten through postsecondary students, available only to accredited schools and districts, at a cost of roughly five dollars per student. It notes that the test measures skills consistent with the National Reading Panel's framework and that schools used it within "response to intervention" (RTI) programs, the tiered model in which all students are screened, strugglers receive targeted help, and progress is rechecked over time.
Pearson's own materials promoted the same uses: pinpointing strengths and weaknesses for struggling readers in an RTI program, tracking growth with the parallel forms and growth scale values, and documenting eligibility for Title I reading services. Because Level A extended into adulthood, community colleges and adult education programs could also use the test for reading placement. In practice the GRADE occupied a middle position between a quick universal screener and a full individual evaluation: broader and more diagnostic than a five-minute fluency probe, but far cheaper than one-on-one testing.
How the GRADE differs from individual reading diagnostics
The GRADE is one of several well-known reading measures, and the differences among them matter when interpreting scores. Individually administered batteries such as the Woodcock Reading Mastery Tests, covered in our guide to the WRMT-III, let a trained examiner watch a single student decode words aloud, attack nonsense words, and respond to probes. That format captures behaviors a group test cannot. In a silent, multiple-choice group setting, the GRADE cannot hear a student read, so it cannot measure oral reading accuracy, rate, or "fluency" directly. Tests like the GORT-5 exist precisely to measure those oral reading skills one student at a time.
The GRADE also differs from broad group achievement batteries such as the Iowa Test, which survey many subjects at once for accountability purposes. The GRADE trades that breadth for depth in a single domain, reading, and adds item-level diagnostic reporting that accountability tests generally lack.
The practical hierarchy in most schools ran in three tiers. A brief screener flagged possible problems, a group diagnostic such as the GRADE described the shape of the problem across a whole class, and an individually administered evaluation confirmed the diagnosis for special education decisions. The GRADE's publisher was explicit that its main advantage over individual testing was time: reliable diagnostic information for thirty students in one sitting, freeing specialists to spend their hours on intervention.
The GRADE today, and where cognitive testing fits
The Buros Center for Testing reports that the publisher discontinued the GRADE in July 2024, and Pearson's website now states that it no longer publishes the GRADE or its mathematics counterpart, steering customers toward aimswebPlus and the WIAT-4 instead. Schools with remaining materials can still find old score reports in student files for years to come, so the score types described above remain worth knowing.
It is also worth being clear about what the GRADE never measured: intelligence. The GRADE is an achievement test. It tells you how well a person currently reads, which reflects instruction and practice as much as ability. A cognitive ability test asks a different question, namely how well a person reasons with words, patterns, and quantities regardless of curriculum. For adults who want that second kind of measurement, the RIOT IQ test (Reasoning and Intelligence Online Test), developed by RIOT IQ with psychometrician Dr. Russell T. Warne, measures 15 subtests across six cognitive indices (verbal reasoning, fluid reasoning, spatial ability, working memory, processing speed, and reaction time) in about 52 minutes, reporting scores on the familiar mean-100, standard-deviation-15 scale. Like the GRADE, it is efficient and standardized; also like the GRADE, it does not replace an individually administered diagnostic evaluation when a disability question is on the table. You can take it at riotiq.com.
FAQ
Is the GRADE assessment still available?
No. According to the Buros Center for Testing, the publisher discontinued the GRADE in July 2024, and Pearson's US site now states it does not publish the test. Existing kits and past score reports remain in circulation in many schools.
What grades does the GRADE assessment cover?
The paper edition spanned prekindergarten through grade 12 plus adults across eleven levels (P, K, 1 through 6, M, H, and A), while GRADE Online covered grades 2 through 12 plus adults.
Who could administer the GRADE?
A regular classroom teacher. The publisher designed the test for group administration without special education training, though purchase was restricted to accredited schools and districts.
How long does the GRADE take?
Pearson listed a completion time of roughly 50 to 90 minutes, varying by level. The subtests themselves are untimed, so administration is paced by the group.
Is the GRADE an IQ test?
No. The GRADE measures reading achievement, meaning learned skills such as decoding, vocabulary, and comprehension. IQ tests measure reasoning ability across multiple domains and are normed on age rather than grade-level curriculum expectations.
What scores does the GRADE report?
Stanines, percentiles, grade equivalents, age equivalents, standard scores, normal curve equivalents, and growth scale values, all based on fall and spring grade-based norms.
