What is the HSPT test? Sections, scoring, and how schools use it

The HSPT test, short for High School Placement Test, is a standardized admissions and placement exam published by Scholastic Testing Service (STS) and taken by eighth graders applying to Catholic and other private high schools. According to STS, high schools nationwide have used the HSPT for over fifty years to assist with admissions, scholarship selection, and curriculum placement. The test contains five multiple-choice subtests (Verbal Skills, Quantitative Skills, Reading, Mathematics, and Language), and results are reported as standard scores and percentile ranks rather than a single pass or fail mark. This article explains what the HSPT measures, how its scoring works, how schools actually use the results, how it compares with an IQ test, and how to prepare sensibly.

The HSPT is a "norm-referenced" test, meaning each student's performance is compared against a national sample of students in the same grade rather than against a fixed cutoff. STS states in its Interpretive Manual that the HSPT is designed for high schools to administer to eighth graders entering high school, and that it provides data for admissions, placement, remediation, and scholarship decisions. The publisher also notes that the test has been in use since 1955 and describes it as the first test battery designed specifically for the transition from elementary school into high school.

Unlike the SAT or ACT, the HSPT has no national testing dates. Individual schools and dioceses order the test, set their own administration dates, and control how scores are distributed. STS does not send results directly to families, and it recommends that each student take the HSPT only once; a school may allow a retest in extenuating circumstances, but that decision rests with the school. Families register through the high school where the student wants to test; in some regions a diocesan cooperative lets students send results to up to three high schools at once.

STS also publishes a Pre-HSPT, a seventh-grade edition of the exam that some high schools use as a practice run, scored against seventh-grade norms.

According to the STS Interpretive Manual, the full battery contains 298 multiple-choice items across five subtests, and it is designed to be taken in its entirety. Each subtest has its own time limit, and calculators are not permitted.

• Verbal Skills (60 items): measures the ability to understand and reason with words through synonyms, antonyms, verbal analogies, verbal classifications, and logical reasoning questions.

• Quantitative Skills (52 items): measures reasoning with numbers, including number series, number manipulations, and quantitative comparisons.

• Reading (62 items): assesses comprehension skills such as remembering important ideas and details, recognizing the central thought of a passage, making logical inferences, and understanding vocabulary in context.

• Mathematics (64 items): covers computation and problem solving drawn from numbers and numeration, measurement, geometry, algebra, and statistics.

• Language (60 items): evaluates command of standard English conventions, including punctuation, capitalization, spelling, grammar, usage, and composition.

STS groups these five subtests into two categories. Verbal Skills and Quantitative Skills are classified as "Cognitive Skills" subtests because they require reasoning, while Reading, Mathematics, and Language are "Basic Skills" subtests that assess learned academic content. Schools may also add one optional 40-item test in Science or Catholic Religion at the end of the session; the publisher notes that optional test scores are never included in the overall Composite score.

HSPT scoring starts with a simple rule: the "raw score" is the number of questions answered correctly, and nothing is subtracted for wrong answers. STS states plainly that there is no penalty for guessing, which is why leaving items blank is never a good strategy on this test.

Raw scores are then converted to several derived scores, described in the publisher's Interpretive Manual:

• Standard scores: each subtest and composite is reported on a scale from 200 to 800, with a mean of 500 and a "standard deviation" (a measure of score spread) of 100. STS built this scale with the Rasch item-response model so that scores stay comparable across the new form it publishes each year.

• National percentile ranks: these range from 1 to 99, with 50 exactly average, and tell you the percentage of students in the national norm sample who scored lower. A local percentile compares the student with the group tested at that school or in that diocese. If percentile reporting is new to you, our guide to IQ percentiles explained covers the same logic in the IQ context.

• Composite scores: the Total Cognitive Skills score combines Verbal and Quantitative Skills, the Total Basic Skills score combines Reading, Mathematics, and Language, and the battery Composite reflects all five subtests. STS notes that each composite is scaled independently, so it is not a simple average of its parts.

• Cognitive Skills Quotient (CSQ): computed from the Verbal and Quantitative subtests plus the student's age, the CSQ is reported on a scale from 55 to 145 with a mean of 100 and a standard deviation of 15, the same metric used for IQ scores. STS describes it as a predictive index of future academic performance.

Reports may also show "stanines" (a coarse 1 to 9 scale) and "grade equivalents." STS itself cautions that grade equivalents are easy to misread: an eighth grader with a mathematics grade equivalent of 10.4 is doing eighth-grade math as well as an average tenth grader would, which is different from being ready for tenth-grade math.

STS is explicit that score use is decided school by school. According to the publisher, each school evaluates scores in its own way, and the criteria one school applies may differ from another school's. In practice, the publisher's materials describe three main uses: admissions decisions, scholarship selection, and curriculum placement, such as assigning entering freshmen to honors or standard course tracks. Some schools also use results to identify students who may need remediation in a specific subject.

Because there is no universal cutoff, a percentile that earns a merit scholarship at one school may be an ordinary result at a more selective one. Families with questions about how a particular school weighs the HSPT should ask that school directly, since STS does not set admissions policy. It is also worth remembering that scores contain measurement error; a single morning's testing is an estimate of a student's skills, not a final verdict.

The honest answer is that the HSPT is partly cognitive and partly achievement based, and the publisher says as much. The Verbal Skills and Quantitative Skills subtests measure reasoning of the kind found on cognitive-abilities tests such as the CogAT, which we describe in our article on what the CogAT test is. The Reading, Mathematics, and Language subtests, by contrast, measure learned academic skills tied to the school curriculum.

The CSQ makes the connection to IQ explicit. STS states that the measure "replaces the traditional IQ score" while serving the same purpose in a school setting, and that unlike pure intelligence tests, the underlying items measure cognitive skills whether those skills are innate or acquired. So a CSQ is interpreted on the familiar mean-100 scale, but it is drawn from a narrower and more curriculum-adjacent item pool than a full intelligence battery. The situation resembles the debate over college admissions exams, which we cover in our analysis of whether the SAT is an IQ test: strong correlations with general cognitive ability, without being designed or normed as a clinical IQ measure.

Because the HSPT mixes reasoning and achievement content, sensible preparation follows what each section measures. The publisher's own advice is refreshingly restrained. STS recommends reading directions carefully, pacing yourself within each timed subtest, working problems on scratch paper since calculators are banned, answering every question because guessing carries no penalty, and checking answer-sheet alignment as you go. STS adds that it is not affiliated with any commercial prep product and believes a well-rounded education is the best preparation. Reasonable extra steps consistent with that guidance include reviewing eighth-grade math topics, reading regularly to build vocabulary and comprehension, and practicing under time pressure so the format feels familiar.

The HSPT itself is only for students entering high school, and its norms exist only for that population. Adults who are curious about their own reasoning ability need a test normed on adults. The RIOT IQ test (the Reasoning and Intelligence Online Test), developed by RIOT IQ with psychometrician Dr. Russell T. Warne, is an online option for adults 18 and over. It includes 15 subtests across six cognitive indices (verbal reasoning, fluid reasoning, spatial ability, working memory, processing speed, and reaction time), takes about 52 minutes, and reports scores on the familiar mean-100, standard-deviation-15 scale. It does not replace an individually administered diagnostic evaluation, but for a normed picture of adult reasoning ability you can take the RIOT IQ test at riotiq.com.

Eighth graders applying to Catholic and other private high schools. According to STS, the test is administered by individual high schools and dioceses for placement into ninth grade, and a seventh-grade Pre-HSPT edition is available as a practice version.

The standard battery contains 298 multiple-choice items across five subtests: Verbal Skills (60), Quantitative Skills (52), Reading (62), Mathematics (64), and Language (60). Schools may add one optional 40-item Science or Catholic Religion test that does not count toward the Composite score.

There is no universal passing score. Results are reported as percentiles from 1 to 99, with 50 exactly average, and each school sets its own criteria for admissions, scholarships, and course placement. A percentile in the 76 to 99 range rates as above average or high on STS reports.

STS recommends taking the HSPT only once. A school may permit a retest under extenuating circumstances, but that decision is made by the individual school or diocese, and STS advises handling it case by case.

No. The score is the number of questions answered correctly, and points are never subtracted for wrong answers, so students should answer every item.

They are built for different populations, so difficulty is not directly comparable. The HSPT is normed on eighth graders and reflects a middle school curriculum, while the SAT is normed on college-bound high school juniors and seniors. Each is challenging relative to its own norm group.
