What is the InView test? A parent's guide to the Cognitive Skills Index

The InView test is a group-administered cognitive abilities battery for students in grades 2 through 12, published by Data Recognition Corporation and usually given by a classroom teacher or testing coordinator rather than a psychologist. It measures reasoning through five short subtests and reports one overall ability score, the "Cognitive Skills Index," or CSI. InView is a genuine ability test, so it sits closer to an intelligence test than most school assessments do. The CSI is still not the same thing as a full-scale IQ from an individually administered battery such as the WISC-V, and the difference matters when a school uses the number for a placement decision. This article covers what InView measures, what its scores mean, how the CSI compares with a clinical IQ, how it pairs with TerraNova, and whether the test is still sold.

According to Data Recognition Corporation's own guide to test interpretation, InView contains five tests that the publisher describes as measures of skills and abilities important for academic success.

• Verbal Reasoning: Words. Solving verbal problems by reasoning deductively, analyzing category attributes, and identifying relationships among words.

• Verbal Reasoning: Context. Drawing logical conclusions from information supplied in a short passage or set of statements.

• Sequences. Working out the rule governing a progression of figures, letters, or numbers, then selecting the item that continues it.

• Analogies. Applying the relationship in a given pair of pictures to a third picture.

• Quantitative Reasoning. Reasoning about numerical and proportional relationships. The publisher's brochure describes it as a measure that is not reliant on math questions.

The battery comes in six levels, so a second grader and a high school junior take different forms of the same five tests. Data Recognition Corporation reports that InView was standardized to include students with disabilities and to provide both age-based and grade-based normative data, and it offers the test in paper-and-pencil form and in an online form running on its DRC INSIGHT delivery engine.

Two subtests are verbal and three are largely figural or quantitative, which is why score reports often separate a verbal result from a nonverbal one. That split resembles other group ability batteries used in schools, including the CogAT.

Each InView score answers a different question.

• Cognitive Skills Index (CSI). The headline number. Data Recognition Corporation defines it as an age-dependent score reflecting overall cognitive ability, on a scale with a mean of 100 and a standard deviation of 16, which puts the average range from 84 to 116. The "standard deviation" is a measure of how spread out scores are around the average.

• National Percentile by Age (NPA) and National Percentile by Grade (NPG). Two percentile ranks for the same performance, one against others of the same age and one against others in the same grade. They can differ for a child whose birthday falls near an enrollment cutoff.

• Anticipated Achievement scores. Available only when InView is given alongside an achievement battery. The publisher defines these as a statistical estimate of the achievement expected in a content area for a student of similar age, grade, and cognitive ability.

• DIFF. A flag marking a meaningful gap between what a student actually scored on the achievement test and what the Anticipated Achievement model predicted. Data Recognition Corporation states that a DIFF indication means the difference would occur by chance alone 20 percent or less of the time.

One structural point drives most of the confusion about InView. The publisher's interpretation guide says directly that the CSI considers overall cognitive ability and does not have specific sub-scores. There is a single composite, with no profile of cognitive indexes beneath it.

Both the CSI and a Wechsler full-scale IQ are normed standard scores centered on 100, and both are built from reasoning tasks. Four differences separate them.

• Scale. The CSI uses a standard deviation of 16, while Wechsler full-scale IQ and most modern IQ scales use 15. Ohio's gifted identification guidance spells out what that means: two standard deviations above the mean is 130 on a standard-deviation-15 test and 132 on a standard-deviation-16 test. A CSI of 132 and an IQ of 130 describe the same standing, so the raw numbers are not interchangeable.

• Depth of structure. The WISC-V yields five primary index scores covering verbal comprehension, visual spatial reasoning, fluid reasoning, working memory, and processing speed, with the full-scale IQ built from seven subtests drawn from a standard battery of ten. InView has five subtests and one composite, and it does not sample working memory or processing speed at all.

• Administration conditions. The WISC-V is given one examiner to one child, which lets the examiner see whether a low score reflects ability or reflects fatigue, anxiety, or a misunderstood instruction. Pearson restricts purchase and administration to professionals holding a "C"-level qualification. InView is normally given to a whole class at once from a printed script, though Ohio's approved-assessment list notes it may also be given individually.

• Purpose. A full-scale IQ from an individually administered battery supports diagnostic and clinical decisions made by a qualified psychologist. InView is an educational screening and planning instrument, marketed by its publisher for planning programs, screening students for placement, and comparing ability with achievement.

A CSI is a reasonable estimate of general reasoning ability under ordinary classroom conditions and a weaker estimate than a clinical battery when the stakes are high. Group ability testing trades precision for reach. A school can test every second grader in a morning, which is why universal screening is so useful for finding capable students nobody nominated, and any single group score carries more measurement error than a score obtained one-on-one.

InView has always been sold as the ability half of a two-part program. The achievement half is the TerraNova test, a norm-referenced battery covering reading, language, mathematics, science, and social studies. Both products came to Data Recognition Corporation when it acquired key assets of the CTB/McGraw-Hill assessment business in 2015.

When the two are given together, the scoring service generates Anticipated Achievement scores and DIFF flags. The logic is a comparison: given this student's measured reasoning ability, age, and grade, how well would a typical student be expected to read, and how well did this student actually read? A large positive gap suggests a student outperforming the statistical expectation. A large negative gap is what schools sometimes call an ability-achievement discrepancy, and it may prompt a closer look by qualified staff.

Two cautions belong with that comparison. Anticipated Achievement is a group-level prediction applied to one individual, and both scores carry measurement error, so a modest gap in either direction is often noise. A discrepancy flag is also not a diagnosis. Identifying a learning disability is the work of qualified professionals using a full evaluation, and a screening comparison can only suggest where to look.

Yes. InView remains a current Data Recognition Corporation product as of September 2026, and it is listed for grades 2 through 12 in both online and paper-and-pencil formats on the publisher's TerraNova NEXT site.

The naming has shifted, which causes some confusion in school paperwork. The achievement partner used to be TerraNova, Third Edition, marketed at terranova3.com. That domain now redirects to the TerraNova NEXT site, where InView appears as a companion cognitive assessment aligned to TerraNova NEXT. Older handbooks that still say "TerraNova 3 with InView" are describing the previous edition of the achievement battery. InView itself kept its name.

The test also remains in active regulatory use. The Ohio Department of Education and Workforce's December 2025 list of assessments approved for gifted identification includes InView Cognitive Abilities Assessment among its approved intelligence assessments, noting that it may be administered in groups or individually.

A CSI is useful information. General reasoning ability is among the better single predictors of how a student will fare academically. Treat the number as an estimate with a range around it rather than a fixed property of a child.

Dr. Russell T. Warne, an intelligence researcher, has written on the arithmetic of combining tests for gifted identification. His analysis found that averaging across more tests steadily improves classification accuracy, from roughly 76 percent with two tests to about 84 percent with four, and he concluded that a full intelligence battery already achieves that averaging internally. A five-subtest group screener sits at the lighter end of that spectrum. It is a sensible first pass and a thin basis for a decision that follows a child for years.

If a school's InView result surprises you, or if it is being used to decide placement, the reasonable next step is a conversation with the school psychologist about a fuller individual evaluation. Adults curious about their own reasoning profile can take the RIOT IQ test, the Reasoning and Intelligence Online Test, developed by RIOT IQ with psychometrician Dr. Russell T. Warne for ages 18 and up. It runs 15 subtests across six cognitive indices covering verbal reasoning, fluid reasoning, spatial ability, working memory, processing speed, and reaction time, takes about 52 minutes, and reports scores on the mean-100, standard-deviation-15 scale. It does not replace an individually administered diagnostic evaluation.

InView is a cognitive abilities test, and Ohio classifies it as an intelligence assessment for gifted identification. Its Cognitive Skills Index is a general ability score from a five-subtest group screener on a standard deviation of 16, so it is not equivalent to a full-scale IQ from an individually administered battery like the WISC-V.

The publisher defines the average range on the CSI as 84 to 116, centered on 100. Because the scale uses a standard deviation of 16, a score of 132 sits two standard deviations above the mean, the starting point Ohio uses for its superior cognitive ability threshold before subtracting the standard error of measurement.

Data Recognition Corporation. InView is a DRC trademark, and it came to DRC through the company's 2015 acquisition of key assets of the CTB/McGraw-Hill assessment business.

Grades 2 through 12, across six test levels. For kindergarten and grade 1, DRC has offered a separate instrument, the Primary Test of Cognitive Skills, which also reports a Cognitive Skills Index.

It marks a gap between the achievement score a student actually earned and the Anticipated Achievement score predicted from their InView results. The publisher states that a flagged difference would occur by chance 20 percent or less of the time. It is a prompt for a closer look by school staff rather than a finding about a student.
