What is the PSAT test? Format, scores, and National Merit explained

The PSAT test, formally the PSAT/NMSQT (Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test), is a digital standardized test that College Board gives to 10th and 11th graders each October. It serves two purposes: it previews the SAT on the same score scale, and it is the qualifying test for the National Merit Scholarship Program run by National Merit Scholarship Corporation. Scores range from 320 to 1520, and the test takes 2 hours and 14 minutes. This article covers who takes the PSAT, what is on it, how scoring maps to the SAT, how National Merit qualification works, and what the scores mean.

According to College Board, the PSAT/NMSQT is designed for 10th and 11th graders and is administered through schools in October. Juniors are the main audience because only the 11th grade administration counts for National Merit qualification for students on a standard four-year high school schedule. Sophomores often take it for practice.

The PSAT/NMSQT is one of three PSAT-related assessments in the SAT Suite, and the variants are easy to confuse:

• PSAT/NMSQT: The October test for 10th and 11th graders. It is the only version that enters students into the National Merit Scholarship Program.

• PSAT 10: According to College Board, the PSAT 10 is identical to the PSAT/NMSQT in content and scoring. It is given to 10th graders in the spring and carries no National Merit implications.

• PSAT 8/9: A slightly easier version built for 8th and 9th graders, used as a baseline to track growth. It is scored on a lower 240 to 1440 scale.

Students do not register individually the way they do for the SAT. Schools order and administer the test, so interested families should ask the school counselor whether and when it is offered.

The PSAT moved to a fully digital format administered in College Board's Bluebook application, matching the digital SAT. College Board reports that the test takes 2 hours and 14 minutes and contains two sections: Reading and Writing (64 minutes, 54 questions) and Math (70 minutes, 44 questions), for a total of 98 questions. Most questions are multiple choice, though some math questions require the student to type in an answer. A calculator is allowed throughout the Math section, and Bluebook includes a built-in graphing calculator.

The test is "multistage adaptive," which means each section is split into two equal-length modules and the difficulty of the second module depends on how the student performed on the first. According to the official PSAT/NMSQT Student Guide, this adaptive design allows a shorter test to produce scores about as reliable as those from a longer fixed-form exam.

The content itself is academic. Reading and Writing uses many short passages with one question each, covering comprehension, vocabulary in context, evidence use, and grammar. Math covers algebra, problem solving and data analysis, advanced math, and some geometry and trigonometry.

The PSAT/NMSQT total score runs from 320 to 1520, built from two section scores that each run from 160 to 760. The SAT uses a 400 to 1600 scale with 200 to 800 sections, and the PSAT 8/9 uses 240 to 1440. These are deliberately staggered versions of one common scale.

College Board reports that the SAT Suite uses "vertical scaling," which means a score has the same meaning across tests in the suite. In the publisher's example, a student who took a PSAT-related test and the SAT on the same day would be expected to earn the same score on both. The PSAT scale simply stops at 1520 because the test is built for younger students and does not measure the extreme top of the SAT's range, so a perfect 1520 does not equal a 1600. College Board also reports that students who take the SAT at least six months after a PSAT-related test typically gain about 20 points per section, reflecting normal academic growth.

Score reports also include percentiles comparing the student with other test takers in the same grade, a score range, and a breakdown of performance across eight content areas. That score range deserves attention. Like every standardized test, the PSAT has "measurement error," meaning an observed score is an estimate rather than an exact fixed value, so small differences between two students or two testing dates should not be overinterpreted.

The PSAT/NMSQT doubles as the entry point to the National Merit Scholarship Program, an academic competition that National Merit Scholarship Corporation has run since 1955. The official Student Guide, which contains the program rules written by the corporation, lays out the mechanics for the current cycle.

• Selection Index: The corporation screens entrants with an "NMSC Selection Index," calculated by doubling the Reading and Writing section score, adding the Math section score, and dividing by 10. The index runs from 48 to 228; section scores of 700 and 710 yield an index of 211.

• Entry: More than 3 million students are expected to take the test in a given October, and about 1.3 million meet the entry requirements, which include taking the test in the third year of grades 9 through 12 and meeting enrollment and citizenship rules.

• Recognition tiers: About 50,000 entrants qualify for program recognition. Roughly 34,000 become Commended Students based on a single national cutoff, and more than 16,000 become Semifinalists, representing less than 1% of graduating seniors nationally.

• State cutoffs vary: Semifinalists are allocated state by state in proportion to each state's share of graduating seniors, so the qualifying Selection Index differs by state and by year. The same score can make Semifinalist in one state and miss in another.

• Finalists and winners: About 95% of Semifinalists advance to Finalist standing after meeting requirements that include a strong academic record, a principal's endorsement, an essay, and SAT or ACT scores that confirm the PSAT performance. The corporation reports that roughly 6,700 National Merit Scholarships plus about 620 corporate Special Scholarships, worth over $30 million combined, are awarded in each cycle.

Only the PSAT/NMSQT counts; the corporation excludes PSAT 10 and PSAT 8/9 scores from consideration.

The PSAT is an achievement-oriented admissions-style test rather than an intelligence test, but the two categories overlap far more than most people assume. The PSAT samples reasoning with words, text, and quantities, which are core ingredients of "general intelligence," the broad ability that IQ tests are built to measure. Research on the parent exam bears this out. In a study published in Psychological Science, Meredith Frey and Douglas Detterman found that SAT scores correlate strongly with measures of general cognitive ability, with correlations in the .7 to .8 range. Because the PSAT sits on the same vertical scale and measures the same constructs, similar logic applies. I cover the nuances in a separate article on whether the SAT is an IQ test, and readers curious about rough score equivalences can see the SAT to IQ conversion discussion.

The practical distinction is purpose. An IQ test is normed on the general population and reports where a person stands on the familiar mean-100 scale. The PSAT is normed on students in a grade level and reports readiness for a specific academic pathway. No college treats a PSAT score as an intelligence measurement, and neither should families.

As for prediction, PSAT scores do useful work. The vertical scale makes them a direct forecast of SAT performance. College Board's AP Potential tool uses PSAT scores to identify students likely to earn a 3 or higher on specific AP Exams. More broadly, cognitive test scores predict academic outcomes to a meaningful degree, a pattern summarized in our article on what IQ scores predict. At the same time, a sophomore-year or junior-year score is a snapshot, and scores routinely move with another year of coursework and preparation.

Because the PSAT rewards accumulated academic skill, the best preparation is consistent coursework plus targeted practice with free official resources.

• Full-length adaptive practice tests: Bluebook contains official practice PSAT/NMSQT exams that reproduce the adaptive format and timing.

• Khan Academy: College Board's official practice partner offers skill-by-skill work tied to suite content, and score reports point students toward weak content areas.

• Timing strategy: National Merit contenders should practice under time pressure during sophomore year, since only the junior-year October administration counts.

For readers past school age, the PSAT is not an option; it is administered only through schools to enrolled students. Adults who want a rigorous measure of their cognitive ability can take the RIOT IQ test (Reasoning and Intelligence Online Test), developed by RIOT IQ with psychometrician Dr. Russell T. Warne for adults 18 and older. It includes 15 subtests across six cognitive indices (verbal reasoning, fluid reasoning, spatial ability, working memory, processing speed, and reaction time), takes about 52 minutes, and reports scores on the standard mean-100, standard-deviation-15 IQ scale. It does not replace an individually administered diagnostic evaluation, but it offers a normed picture of adult reasoning ability. You can take it at riotiq.com.

PSAT/NMSQT stands for Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. It is cosponsored by College Board and National Merit Scholarship Corporation.

It depends on the goal. Score reports include percentiles showing where a student stands among grade-level peers. National Merit Semifinalist status requires a Selection Index near the top of the 48 to 228 scale, with cutoffs varying by state and year.

No. Colleges do not receive or use PSAT scores in admissions decisions. The score's value lies in practice, National Merit eligibility, AP course planning, and scholarship outreach programs.

No. There is no passing or failing score. Results are used for feedback and scholarship qualification rather than pass-fail decisions.

It is slightly easier. The PSAT is built for younger students and its scale tops out at 1520 instead of 1600, but the sections, timing, and question styles closely mirror the SAT.

No. The PSAT is administered through schools to enrolled students. Adults who want a normed cognitive assessment can take the RIOT IQ test, which is designed for people 18 and older.
