What is the DIAL-4? The preschool developmental screener explained

The DIAL-4 (Developmental Indicators for the Assessment of Learning, Fourth Edition) is a developmental screening test for children ages 2 years 6 months through 5 years 11 months. Published by Pearson in 2011 and written by Carol Mardell, PhD, and Dorothea S. Goldenberg, EdD, it screens motor, concepts, and language skills directly with the child, and gathers information on self-help and social-emotional development through parent and teacher questionnaires. A full screening takes about 30 to 45 minutes, and the results indicate whether a child may need a fuller evaluation. This article explains what the DIAL-4 covers, how the station-based screening works, what the Speed DIAL-4 short form is, how scores and cutoffs are used, and how developmental screening differs from cognitive ability testing.

Pearson describes the DIAL-4 as a "global screener" designed to assess large groups of young children quickly and efficiently and to identify those who may need additional assessment. It covers five areas of development. The first three are "performance-based" areas, meaning a trained screener works through short tasks with the child directly. The last two are rated through questionnaires completed by the adults who know the child best.

• Motor: large and small muscle control, screened through tasks such as throwing, standing on one leg, hopping, skipping, building with blocks, cutting, copying designs, and writing the child's name.

• Concepts: early academic understanding, including naming body parts, identifying colors, rote and meaningful counting, sorting shapes, and rapid object naming.

• Language: speaking and understanding, including personal information, articulation of speech sounds, naming objects and actions, letter names and sounds, rhyming, and simple problem solving.

• Self-help development: everyday independence skills such as dressing and eating, rated on the Parent Questionnaire and Teacher Questionnaire rather than tested directly.

• Social-emotional development: how the child relates to other children and adults and manages emotions, also rated through the parent and teacher questionnaires.

According to a test review published in the Journal of Psychoeducational Assessment, these five domains were chosen to align with the developmental areas identified by the National Educational Goals Panel, the National Association for the Education of Young Children, and Head Start standards. The screener also builds in "behavioral observations," short ratings of how the child behaved during each performance area, which give the screening team additional context about attention, cooperation, and activity level.

The DIAL-4 uses what Pearson training materials call a "stations approach" to testing, a distinctive feature of the DIAL series. In a large group screening, a team sets up separate stations for the motor, concepts, and language areas, each run by a trained "operator" using the handbook and materials for that area. Children move from station to station while a coordinator tracks paperwork and parents complete their questionnaires. This design is what lets a school screen dozens of children in a single morning, and it is one reason the DIAL-4 is a common choice for community-wide preschool screening events.

The materials themselves are deliberately child-friendly. Test stimuli are presented one at a time on a dial apparatus, along with manipulatives such as colored blocks and cutting cards, so tasks feel more like structured play than testing. The DIAL-4 can also be administered by a single examiner in a smaller setting; the stations format is an option for volume, and it is a defining part of how the test is used in practice.

The complete kit includes English and Spanish record forms, operator handbooks in both languages for the motor, concepts, and language areas, and parent questionnaires. Pearson states that both the English and Spanish versions screen all five areas, which matters for programs serving Spanish-speaking families who want a child screened in the language they know best.

The Speed DIAL-4 is a shortened screener built from a subset of DIAL-4 items. According to Pearson, it takes about 20 minutes and can be administered by a single person, which makes it practical in settings that cannot mount a full station-based screening, such as public health departments, pediatric offices, health fairs, homes, and individual classrooms.

Pearson training materials list ten core items drawn from the motor, concepts, and language areas, including standing, hopping, and skipping, body parts, rapid object naming, colors, meaningful counting, articulation, actions, letters and sounds, problem solving, and copying. The Speed DIAL-4 covers the same age range as the full test and was reviewed separately in the Journal of Psychoeducational Assessment as a tool for identifying children who may need intervention or diagnostic assessment. The trade-off is coverage: a shorter item set means less information in each area, so programs that can afford the time generally get more from the full screening.

The DIAL-4 produces standard scores and percentile ranks for the total screening and for each area, with norms broken into two-month age bands so that a young 3-year-old is compared with other children the same age. Programs then apply a "cutoff," a line below which a child's performance is flagged. Pearson's materials show cutoff options ranging from 1 standard deviation below the mean (about the 16th percentile) to 2 standard deviations below the mean (about the 2nd percentile), and the decision for each child is recorded simply as "potential delay" or "OK."

That vocabulary is worth taking seriously. A screener sorts children into two groups: those whose development looks typical for their age and those who should be looked at more closely. A "potential delay" result is an invitation to follow up with a full evaluation by professionals such as a school psychologist, speech-language pathologist, or occupational therapist. It is not a diagnosis of any condition, and the test authors are explicit that the DIAL-4's sole purpose is to distinguish children who may be at risk for academic difficulty from those who are not. Screeners also produce false positives and false negatives, which is why results are combined with parent input and professional judgment rather than treated as verdicts.

The DIAL-4 shows up most often in three settings. School districts use it at preschool round-ups and child find events, where the station format allows high volume. Early childhood programs use it because its five domains map onto Head Start performance standards, and the test is listed on the National Head Start Association's resource platform for early childhood practitioners. Clinics and health programs tend to use the Speed DIAL-4, since one screener can administer it in about 20 minutes.

One caution comes from the authors themselves: the review literature notes that they reject using the DIAL-4 as a kindergarten readiness test. Its job is risk identification, and a school that wants to measure readiness concepts directly would look instead at a tool like the Bracken School Readiness Assessment, which tests color, letter, number, and shape knowledge in depth. Families whose pediatrician raised a developmental question may also encounter the Denver II, a medical-setting developmental screener with a similar flag-and-refer logic.

The DIAL-4 answers a narrow question: is this child's development on track for their age? It does not measure intelligence, and a screening result should never be read as an IQ score. When a screening flags a concern, the follow-up evaluation may include an individually administered cognitive test normed for young children, along with language, motor, and adaptive measures. Parents curious about how cognitive ability is actually measured at different ages can read our overview of IQ tests for kids.

For adults, the landscape is different. The RIOT IQ test (Reasoning and Intelligence Online Test), developed by RIOT IQ with psychometrician Dr. Russell T. Warne, is a normed online measure for adults 18 and older. It includes 15 subtests across six cognitive indices (verbal reasoning, fluid reasoning, spatial ability, working memory, processing speed, and reaction time), takes about 52 minutes, and reports scores on the familiar mean-100, standard-deviation-15 scale. It offers a rigorous picture of adult cognitive ability, though like any online measure it does not replace an individually administered diagnostic evaluation. You can take it at riotiq.com.

Children ages 2 years 6 months through 5 years 11 months. The fourth edition lowered the entry age from 3:0 to 2:6.

Pearson lists 30 to 45 minutes for the full DIAL-4. The Speed DIAL-4 short form takes about 20 minutes and can be given by one person.

No. It is a screening tool that flags children who may benefit from a full evaluation. Diagnostic decisions require comprehensive assessment by qualified professionals.

Yes. Pearson publishes Spanish record forms, parent questionnaires, and operator handbooks, and both language versions screen all five developmental areas.

It means the child scored below the cutoff the program selected, somewhere between the 2nd and 16th percentile for their age depending on the setting chosen, and should be referred for further assessment.

No. It screens developmental skills such as motor coordination, early concepts, and language. Measuring intelligence requires a full cognitive assessment designed for that purpose.
