What Is TestGorilla? The Skills Testing Platform Explained
TestGorilla is a pre-employment skills testing platform, not a single test: employers assemble an assessment from a library the vendor currently advertises at more than 350 tests, up to five tests plus 20 custom questions per assessment. Its cognitive ability tests, 17 short screens covering problem solving, numerical, verbal, abstract, and spatial reasoning, run about 9 to 13 minutes each. Launched in the summer of 2020 by Wouter Durville and Otto Verhage, the Dutch company raised a $70 million Series A in 2022 and names Sony, PepsiCo, Oracle, and the NHS among its customers. This article explains how its assessments work and what its cognitive scores can tell you.

How a TestGorilla assessment works

When you receive a TestGorilla invitation, you are taking a package the employer built: up to five tests from the library plus custom questions in video, multiple-choice, coding, file-upload, or essay form. The library spans cognitive ability, personality and culture, programming, role-specific skills, and job simulations. The cognitive tests are all multiple-choice and short: Problem Solving runs 9 minutes, most others 10, Critical Thinking and the attention-to-detail tests up to 12 or 13. A typical full assessment lands under an hour, but there is no standard "TestGorilla test length," because every employer's package differs.

What TestGorilla measures well, and what it does not publish

Short tests of problem solving, numerical, verbal, abstract, and spatial reasoning are classic indicators of general cognitive ability, and stacking several in one assessment is a reasonable screen. The honest caveat is transparency: TestGorilla describes its tests as scientifically validated, but no public technical manual with reliability coefficients, validity studies, or norm composition could be found on its pages, a real contrast with publishers like Assessio, whose Matrigma manual is public, or the documented . Until that evidence is published, claims about accuracy rest on the vendor's word. Platforms in this space, including , increasingly compete on exactly this kind of documentation.

Is TestGorilla an IQ test?

No. Its cognitive screens tap the same abilities IQ tests measure, but each is a 10-minute slice, scored for hiring comparison rather than against national norms, and no IQ score is produced. That is the right tool for ranking applicants; it is the wrong tool for knowing where you stand. For that, the Reasoning and Intelligence Online Test from RIOT IQ measures six cognitive abilities against real norms and reports a full profile; you can take a free IQ test and get your own numbers rather than a pass-fail verdict.

Frequently asked questions

What is a TestGorilla assessment?

An employer-built package of up to five library tests plus up to 20 custom questions, which can include video answers, coding tasks, and essays.

How long does a TestGorilla test take?

Individual cognitive tests run about 9 to 13 minutes. Total time depends on how many tests the employer includes; a full five-test assessment usually lands under an hour.

Is TestGorilla an IQ test?

No. Its cognitive tests measure IQ-adjacent abilities in short form, but no full battery or IQ score exists on the platform.

Who founded TestGorilla?

Wouter Durville and Otto Verhage; the platform launched in summer 2020 and raised a $70 million Series A from Atomico and Balderton Capital in 2022.

What is a good TestGorilla score?

Scoring mechanics are not publicly documented, and cutoffs are set per employer, so no universal "good score" exists.
