What Is the SSAT Test? The Secondary School Admission Test Explained
The SSAT is the Secondary School Admission Test for private school applicants in grades 3-11. See its format, guessing penalty, and how it relates to IQ.

The SSAT, short for Secondary School Admission Test, is a private school admissions test that has been in use since 1957. It is given at three levels: Elementary for students in grades 3 and 4, Middle for grades 5 through 7, and Upper for grades 8 through 11. Its longtime publisher, The Enrollment Management Association, merged with the ISEE's publisher in 2026 to form E3n, so the two rival tests now share an owner. The SSAT measures verbal, math, and reading skills for admissions purposes. It is not an IQ test, and its scoring has one famous quirk worth understanding before test day.
What the SSAT measures
The publisher describes three core skill areas: verbal reasoning, mathematics, and reading comprehension, plus an unscored writing sample that goes to recipient schools and an unscored experimental section. The verbal section is built from synonyms and analogies, classic formats that lean on vocabulary and relational reasoning. The publisher also calls the SSAT a "virtually unspeeded" test, meaning most students have adequate time to consider each question, so it rewards accuracy over raw speed.
Format and levels
On the current computer-based Upper Level, the whole session runs about 3 hours 10 minutes: a 25-minute writing sample, two 30-minute quantitative sections of 25 questions each with no calculators, a 40-question reading section, a 60-question verbal section split evenly between synonyms and analogies, and a short experimental section, with two breaks. The Middle Level runs the same sections at easier content, and the Elementary Level uses a shorter format for younger students. Families can test on paper on standard dates, at home, or at Prometric centers, with annual limits that vary by mode.

The SSAT's signature scoring rule is "formula scoring": on the Middle and Upper Levels, each correct answer earns a point, each wrong answer subtracts a quarter point, and omitted questions cost nothing. The Elementary Level has no penalty. This changes strategy: wild guessing can lower an SSAT score, while informed guessing after eliminating an option or two still pays on average. The rival ISEE never penalizes wrong answers, which is one of the clearest practical differences between the two tests.
How SSAT scoring works
Upper Level sections are scaled from 500 to 800, with a total score between 1500 and 2400; the Middle Level uses a 440 to 710 scale per section. Percentiles compare a student only with first-time takers of the same grade on standard dates in the U.S. and Canada over the past three years. The publisher's own interpretive guide addresses the shock some families feel: a percentile may look low "because SSAT test takers are a small and highly competitive group of students who plan to go to the world's best independent schools." A middling SSAT percentile is middling among a selective group, which is a very different thing from a population percentile.
Is the SSAT an IQ test?
No. Synonyms, analogies, and quantitative problem solving are cognitively demanding formats, and admissions tests of this family correlate strongly with general cognitive ability in published research; Frey and Detterman's SAT study is the standard anchor, and we walk through that evidence in our article on the SAT and IQ. But no study links individual SSAT scores to IQ, and the applicant-pool norms make any direct conversion meaningless. A real IQ score comes from a test normed on the general population, such as the RIOT IQ test.
Frequently asked questions
What is a good SSAT score?
Competitive boarding schools often look for percentiles in the 70s or higher, but targets vary widely by school. Remember the norm group: the 50th percentile means standing in the middle of a strong applicant pool.
Should my child guess on the SSAT?
On the Middle and Upper Levels, guess only after eliminating at least one answer choice; skip questions that are pure coin flips. On the Elementary Level there is no penalty, so no question should be left blank.
How is the SSAT different from the ISEE?
The SSAT penalizes wrong answers at its upper levels while the ISEE does not, the SSAT tests vocabulary through synonyms and analogies while the ISEE includes a separate math achievement section, and the score scales differ. Most schools accept either test.
Does the SSAT measure intelligence?
It measures developed verbal, quantitative, and reading skills, which are related to general ability without being an IQ measure. For how schools assess ability directly, see how gifted testing works.
