The MAP test, branded MAP Growth by its publisher NWEA, is a computer-adaptive achievement test used in kindergarten through twelfth grade to measure what students have learned in math, reading, language usage, and science. It is usually given three times a year, in fall, winter, and spring, and it reports results on the "RIT" scale, a grade-independent score that tracks academic growth over time. One thing it is not: an IQ test. NWEA's own guidance treats MAP Growth as an achievement measure that schools pair with a separate ability test when screening for gifted programs.
What the MAP test measures
MAP Growth is what testing specialists call an interim assessment: it checks achievement and growth between the big end-of-year state tests. Because the test is computer-adaptive, question difficulty adjusts to each answer, so a strong fourth grader can be measured accurately even when working far above grade level. NWEA reports that the test is used by more than 13 million students across thousands of districts in more than 145 countries, in subjects spanning mathematics, reading, language usage, and science, with English and Spanish versions available.
How RIT scores work
RIT stands for "Rasch UnIT," named for the Danish psychometrician Georg Rasch. It is an equal-interval scale, meaning a gain of 5 points represents the same amount of learning anywhere on the scale, and scores generally fall between 100 and 350. Unlike a grade-level score, a RIT score measures a student's academic level independent of age or grade, which is what makes it useful for tracking growth from fall to spring and year over year. Alongside the RIT score, families see an achievement percentile, comparing the student with the national norm group for their grade, and a growth percentile, comparing their progress with peers who started at the same level.
Is the MAP test an IQ test?
No. The distinction matters and the publisher itself draws it. NWEA's gifted-placement guide describes identification as combining a measure of academic achievement, like MAP Growth, with a measure of ability or aptitude, like the CogAT, plus teacher ratings. Ohio's state list of approved gifted assessments files MAP Growth under achievement tests, which measure "acquired knowledge in specific academic fields," in a separate section from intelligence tests, which measure "a student's ability to think or reason." NWEA also cautions that MAP Growth "was not specifically designed or validated" as a gifted-identification instrument, even where states allow it in that role. How schools use MAP scores
• Growth monitoring: The core use: comparing fall, winter, and spring scores to see whether each student is on a healthy learning trajectory.
• Universal screening: Districts use MAP as a first-pass screen in RTI and MTSS frameworks, and as a low-cost phase-one filter in gifted identification before administering an ability test such as the NNAT or CogAT to high scorers.
• Placement and prediction: Scores guide instructional grouping and predict performance on state tests, the ACT, and the SAT, according to NWEA.
Frequently asked questions
What is a good MAP score?
It depends on grade and season. The most useful number is the achievement percentile: the 50th percentile is the national average for that grade and term, and gifted screening cutoffs often sit near the 90th percentile or above.
Does a high MAP score mean a high IQ?
Not directly. High achievement often accompanies high measured ability, and a top MAP percentile is a sensible trigger for ability testing, but the RIT scale measures learned skills, not IQ.
How often do students take the MAP test?
Most schools test three times per year, in fall, winter, and spring, though the schedule is set by the district.
Can you study for the MAP test?
There is no fixed content to cram: the test adapts to the student. Steady reading and math practice move the score because they move the underlying skills.
