What Is the Star Test? Renaissance Star Assessments Explained

The Star test refers to Star Assessments, a family of short, computer-adaptive achievement tests from Renaissance Learning: Star Early Literacy for pre-kindergarten through grade 3, Star Reading for kindergarten through grade 12, and Star Math for grades 1 through 12. Each test typically takes about 15 to 20 minutes and reports how a student's reading or math achievement compares with peers nationwide. Like the MAP test, Star measures what a student has learned; it is not an IQ test, and states that approve it for gifted screening approve it in the achievement category, separate from mental-ability tests.

Renaissance Learning, based in Wisconsin Rapids, Wisconsin, pioneered computer-adaptive testing in the classroom in 1996 with the introduction of Star Reading, and the adaptive engine is still the product's defining feature: each question's difficulty depends on the previous answer, which is why a reliable score emerges in about 20 minutes rather than a full class period. The family now includes phonics, preschool, and curriculum-based measurement variants, plus Spanish-language versions.

• Star Early Literacy: For pre-K through grade 3: print concepts, phonological awareness, phonics and word recognition, fluency, vocabulary, and early numeracy, in roughly 15 minutes.

• Star Reading: For independent readers from kindergarten through grade 12: overall reading achievement and comprehension.

• Star Math: For grades 1 through 12: numbers and operations, algebra, geometry and measurement, and data analysis, statistics, and probability.

The headline numbers are the Scaled Score, which places a student on a single continuous scale so growth can be tracked over time, and the Percentile Rank, which runs from 1 to 99 and compares the student with others in the same grade nationwide. Reports add a Student Growth Percentile, Grade Equivalent scores from 0.0 to 12.9 and above, and domain scores. Renaissance's own materials caution that a high Grade Equivalent does not mean a child is ready for that grade's work; it means the child scored as well as a typical student of that grade would score on this test's material.

No. The cleanest evidence comes from how states classify it. When Georgia's Department of Education approved Star Reading and Star Math as gifted screeners in 2022, it approved them for the achievement category; Georgia's screening framework requires data in four categories, and mental ability, the IQ-type category, is served by separate tests such as the CogAT and the OLSAT. Ohio's approved-assessment list draws the same line, filing Star under achievement tests. A Star percentile is norm-referenced, but it is not a deviation IQ: the scale, the construct, and the purpose all differ.

The Percentile Rank is the number to read: 50 is the national average for the grade. Schools commonly flag scores below about the 25th percentile for extra support and use high percentiles as one gifted-screening signal.

About 15 minutes for Star Early Literacy and about 20 minutes for Star Reading and Star Math, per Renaissance.

Typically three times a year as a universal screener, in fall, winter, and spring, with more frequent progress monitoring for students receiving interventions.

No. Star measures learned reading and math skills. Strong achievement often goes with strong reasoning ability, but measuring reasoning is a different test's job, as our guide to how IQ tests work explains.
