What is the Differential Aptitude Test? The DAT battery explained

The Differential Aptitude Tests, almost always shortened to DAT, were a multi-aptitude battery that measured eight separate abilities in students from grade 7 upward and in adults who had finished those grades. The battery was published by The Psychological Corporation, which Pearson later absorbed, and it was built for school course selection and career guidance rather than for clinical diagnosis. It is no longer sold in the United States. Pearson's current US professional catalog lists no Differential Aptitude Tests product, and the classic battery has been replaced by a short computer-adaptive employment test called DAT Next Generation. This article covers the eight aptitudes, the timing and scoring of the original battery, what happened to it, and how well a profile of separate aptitude scores really predicted school and work outcomes.

One note first. If you searched for "the DAT" and meant the dental school admissions exam, that is an unrelated test sharing the same initials, and our guide to the Dental Admission Test covers it.

The battery first appeared in 1947 under the authorship of George K. Bennett, Harold G. Seashore and Alexander G. Wesman, and its structure stayed recognisable across later editions. According to Pearson's product documentation, the tests measured "aptitude for learning and succeeding in eight key areas," grouped by the publisher into three families.

• General cognitive abilities: Verbal Reasoning and Numerical Ability. Pearson described these as measures of the ability to learn in an occupational or training setting, whether from books, manuals, trainers or self-instruction. These two tests also combined into a composite.

• Perceptual abilities: Abstract Reasoning, Mechanical Reasoning and Space Relations. Abstract Reasoning was a nonverbal measure of relationships among figure patterns. Space Relations asked the test taker to visualise how a two-dimensional pattern would look folded into a three-dimensional object and rotated. Mechanical Reasoning, by the publisher's own description, closely paralleled the Bennett Mechanical Comprehension Test, so anyone comparing options today should read our explainer on mechanical aptitude testing alongside this one.

• Clerical and language skills: Spelling, Language Usage and Clerical Speed and Accuracy. Language Usage measured detection of errors in grammar, punctuation and capitalisation. Clerical Speed and Accuracy was a simple perceptual matching task scored for speed, and it was the one subtest Pearson kept as paper administration only. It belongs to the same family of measures described in our article on the clerical aptitude test.

The design logic was "differential" in a specific sense. Rather than producing one summary number, the battery produced a profile, on the theory that a counsellor could compare a student's relative strengths across eight areas and steer course choices accordingly.

Pearson listed the age range for the Fifth Edition as grades 7 through 12 plus adults who had completed those grades, with one form at each of two levels. Level 1 targeted the younger band and Level 2 the senior high school years. Purchasing required B-level qualification, meaning a master's degree in education or a related field, so this was a professionally controlled instrument rather than something a school could simply download.

Timing was substantial by modern standards. The publisher gave a complete battery working time of 2.5 hours, with a partial battery option at 1.5 hours for schools that only needed some of the aptitudes. Individual subtest limits ran from 12 minutes for Language Usage up to 20 minutes each for Verbal Reasoning, Numerical Ability and Mechanical Reasoning, with Abstract Reasoning and Space Relations at 15 minutes. Adding instructions and breaks, a full administration consumed most of a school morning.

Scores were reported as percentile ranks, stanines and scaled scores, presented separately for males and females as well as combined. The Rehabilitation Measures Database maintained by the Shirley Ryan AbilityLab records nine reported scores in total: one for each of the eight scales plus a Scholastic Aptitude composite formed from Verbal Reasoning and Numerical Ability. Stanines were placed on a scale with a mean of 5 and a standard deviation of 2, meaning a stanine of 5 sat at the middle of the norm group. Internal consistency reliability across the subtests was reported in the range of .73 to .95. The weaker end of that range deserves attention when a counsellor is comparing two subtest scores within one student's profile.

Norming was the battery's strongest selling point. A 1993 review of the DAT in the ERIC database called the norming process impressive and reported that the standardization samples for that edition included about 170,000 students, a figure few group aptitude batteries of the era came close to.

The classic battery is gone from the American market. Pearson's current US professional assessment catalog contains no Differential Aptitude Tests product of any kind, and the Fifth Edition and the employment variant survive only as archived web pages. Creative Organizational Design, a North American test distributor, now lists both as no longer available and notes that as of 2025 the remaining paper versions of the DAT for Personnel and Career Assessment are going out of print.

What replaced them is a different animal. Pearson TalentLens sells DAT Next Generation, an adaptive online test that keeps the name and the 1947 lineage while discarding most of the original structure. It uses computerised adaptive testing, so item difficulty adjusts to the responses given. There are five subtests, each containing only 15 items: Verbal Analogies, Numerical Calculations, Numerical Sequences, Abstract Reasoning and Space Relations. Pearson puts typical completion at about 12 minutes and offers the test in English, French, Dutch and Spanish, with reporting as a percentile against a chosen norm group plus T-scores, stanines and sten scores. The stated uses are recruitment, talent identification, apprenticeships, career guidance and higher education.

Two things are worth noticing about that swap. The spelling and clerical speed measures are gone, and the marketed purpose has shifted toward hiring. A school counsellor looking for the old eight-area student profile will not find it in the current product.

Pearson published validity figures for the employment version. The publisher reported correlations of .46 to .48 with training success for computer programmers, and .24 to .31 with job performance for administrative, technical and engineering employees. Those are useful relationships for a screening tool, and they also mean that even in the best case the test accounts for a minority of the variation in outcomes.

The publisher also reported that DAT subtests correlated .62 to .81 with the corresponding tests of the General Aptitude Test Battery and .73 to .79 with corresponding tests of the ASVAB. Correlations that high between separately developed batteries tell you that these instruments are largely tapping the same underlying abilities. Readers who encounter the government battery in an employment service context will find the specifics in our guide to the General Aptitude Test Battery.

This raises the question the DAT was named after. Did eight separate scores predict eight different things? The honest answer from the broader literature is that most of the predictive work in any multi-aptitude battery is done by what the subtests share, a general factor usually written as "g," which is the common variance running through all cognitive tests. Writing in the Journal of Intelligence, Thomas Coyle describes this "primacy of g" position and then presents the case for a limited exception. He reports that "ability tilt," the difference between a person's mathematical and verbal scores, predicts domain-specific outcomes: math tilt predicted STEM degrees, patents and engineering jobs, while verbal tilt predicted humanities achievements. The 1993 ERIC review reached a compatible practical verdict, praising the battery's quality and use while calling for more concurrent validity evidence in broadly defined occupational areas.

So a DAT profile carried genuine information, mostly about overall reasoning ability, with a smaller and more specific signal in the shape of the profile. Treating a 10-point gap between two subtest percentiles as a career verdict was never supported by the data.

The practical lesson from the DAT's history is that a battery of separately named aptitudes and a well-built general ability test are answering overlapping questions. If the goal is vocational exploration, interest inventories and coursework performance carry information no aptitude battery supplies. If the goal is an accurate estimate of general reasoning ability, a shorter modern instrument with current norms will usually do the job in less testing time.

That is the gap the Reasoning and Intelligence Online Test was designed for. The RIOT IQ test was developed by RIOT IQ with psychometrician Dr. Russell T. Warne for adults 18 and over, and it runs 15 subtests across six cognitive indices covering verbal reasoning, fluid reasoning, spatial ability, working memory, processing speed and reaction time. It takes about 52 minutes and reports scores on the familiar scale with a mean of 100 and a standard deviation of 15. It does not replace an individually administered diagnostic evaluation, and it is not a career placement tool. For a current, properly normed picture of adult reasoning ability, you can take the RIOT IQ test.

DAT is the standard abbreviation for Differential Aptitude Tests, the plural form the publisher used because the product was a battery of separate tests rather than a single exam. The same initials also belong to the Dental Admission Test, which is unrelated.

Not in its original form in the United States. Pearson's US catalog no longer lists it, and North American distributors describe the paper versions as out of print. Pearson TalentLens sells an adaptive online successor called DAT Next Generation.

Verbal Reasoning, Numerical Ability, Abstract Reasoning, Clerical Speed and Accuracy, Mechanical Reasoning, Space Relations, Spelling and Language Usage. Verbal Reasoning and Numerical Ability were combined into a Scholastic Aptitude composite.

Pearson listed a complete battery working time of 2.5 hours, with a partial battery option of 1.5 hours. Individual subtests were timed at 12 to 20 minutes each.

No. It produced aptitude profiles reported as percentiles and stanines rather than a deviation IQ on the mean-100 scale, and it was designed for educational and vocational guidance. Its subtests correlate substantially with the sorts of reasoning tasks IQ tests use, so the two overlap without being interchangeable.

Purchase required B-level qualification from the publisher, which meant a master's degree in education or a related field. It was administered in groups, usually in schools.
