What Is an AFQT Score? The Military's Enlistment Score Explained
An AFQT score is the ASVAB percentile that decides military enlistment eligibility. See how it is computed, the category bands, and current minimums.

An AFQT score is the number that decides whether you can enlist in the U.S. military at all. The AFQT, short for Armed Forces Qualification Test, is not a separate exam: it is a score computed from four subtests of the ASVAB, specifically Arithmetic Reasoning, Mathematics Knowledge, Word Knowledge, and Paragraph Comprehension. It is reported as a percentile from 1 to 99 against a national sample of American youth, and every service branch sets its enlistment floor in AFQT terms.
How the AFQT score is computed
The four AFQT subtests are the verbal and math core of the ASVAB. Word Knowledge and Paragraph Comprehension combine into a Verbal Expression score, which in the commonly documented formula counts double alongside Arithmetic Reasoning and Mathematics Knowledge. The result is converted to a percentile: an AFQT of 62 means you scored as well as or better than 62% of the reference group. That group is a nationally representative sample of 18-to-23-year-olds tested in 1997, the "Profile of American Youth" study, and as of 2026 those 1997-based norms, implemented in 2004, are still the standard.
AFQT categories and minimum scores
The Defense Department groups percentiles into categories: Category I (93-99), Category II (65-92), Category IIIA (50-64), Category IIIB (31-49), Category IV (10-30, subdivided), and Category V (1-9). Federal law caps how many Category IV recruits the services may accept each year and requires anyone without a high school diploma to score at least 31, and DoD accession policy bars Category V from enlisting.
• Army: Minimum AFQT of 31 to enlist, per the Army's own recruiting materials.
• Air Force: Minimum of 31 for high school seniors and graduates, 50 for GED holders, per airforce.com. Prep sites still widely repeat an outdated 36.

Is the AFQT an IQ score?
No, and the reasons are instructive. The AFQT is strongly "g-loaded": classic military research by Ree and Earles found that the ASVAB predicts training success almost entirely through general cognitive ability, and later work by Roberts and colleagues argued the battery leans heavily on acquired verbal and quantitative knowledge. But an IQ score sits on a normed scale with a mean of 100 and standard deviation of 15, re-normed against the current adult population. An AFQT percentile against a 1997 youth sample is a different animal, and no legitimate AFQT-to-IQ conversion exists. We cover the broader question in our article on military IQ and the ASVAB; for a real normed score, see how adults can get an actual IQ score.
AFQT vs. GT and other line scores
The AFQT answers one question: can you enlist. Which jobs you qualify for is decided by service-specific composites built from different ASVAB subtest combinations, called line scores, such as the Army's GT score. The two are computed from the same test session but gate different doors; our guide to the GT score walks through that side.
Frequently asked questions
What is a good AFQT score?
Anything from 50 up (Category IIIA and above) keeps most enlistment options open, and 65 or higher (Category II) is competitive for programs that screen on the AFQT. The floors themselves are 31 for the Army and Air Force diploma holders.
Can I retake the ASVAB to raise my AFQT?
Yes: after one calendar month, again after another month, and then at six-month intervals, with scores valid for enlistment for two years. Preparation genuinely moves the math and vocabulary subtests; see how to practice for the ASVAB.
Does an AFQT of 93 mean an IQ of 130?
No. Both are high scores, but the AFQT percentile is computed against 1997 youth norms on four school-related subtests, so it cannot be translated onto the IQ scale.
Why is verbal ability weighted so heavily?
The commonly documented formula counts the combined verbal score twice, reflecting how central reading and vocabulary are to military training materials.
