The Wechsler Nonverbal Scale of Ability (WNV) is a nonverbal test of general cognitive ability for people aged 4 years 0 months through 21 years 11 months, published by Pearson in 2006 and authored by David Wechsler and Jack A. Naglieri. Its defining feature is that instructions are delivered through "pictorial directions," illustrated panels that show the examinee what each task requires, so a child who cannot hear or does not speak English can be tested on close to equal footing. This article explains how the WNV works, who it serves, how it compares with other Wechsler tests and other nonverbal instruments, and what a nonverbal-only score can and cannot tell you.
What the WNV is and where it came from
The Wechsler family of tests is the most widely used line of individually administered intelligence tests in the world, covering preschoolers (WPPSI), school-age children (WISC), and adults (WAIS). Those batteries all lean heavily on spoken language: the examiner reads instructions aloud, and several subtests require spoken answers. That design works well for most examinees and poorly for a predictable minority, including deaf students, recent immigrants, and children with language disorders.
The WNV was Pearson's answer to that gap. According to the publisher, it is "a nonverbal measure of ability for culturally and linguistically diverse groups," built for cases where the examinee is neither English-language nor Spanish-language proficient or has other language considerations. Rather than inventing tasks from scratch, the authors adapted familiar Wechsler material. Publisher materials report that Coding was adapted from the WISC-IV, Spatial Span from the WISC-IV Integrated, Object Assembly from earlier WPPSI, WISC, and WAIS editions, and Picture Arrangement from the WISC-III and WAIS-III. The result keeps the Wechsler look and feel while removing the requirement to understand or produce English.
Scores follow the standard convention: a full scale score with a mean of 100 and a "standard deviation" (a measure of how spread out scores are) of 15, plus subtest T-scores and percentile ranks. The test was normed on about 1,323 examinees in the United States and 875 in Canada, samples the publisher reports were matched to their respective populations.
How pictorial directions change the testing session
On a conventional IQ test, the examiner explains each task in words. On the WNV, the examinee instead sees a sequence of pictures: a cartoon panel shows a person looking at the puzzle, thinking about the choices, and marking the correct answer. Co-author Jack Naglieri has described these as illustrations that actually show the examinee what to do, supplemented by short verbal statements in several languages that the examiner may use when needed. The kit includes those minimal verbal instructions in French, Spanish, Chinese, German, and Dutch.
This matters for two reasons. First, the examiner does not need to pantomime or improvise, which keeps administration standardized across examiners and countries. Second, no task requires a spoken response, so expressive language is removed from the score along with receptive language. Alan Kaufman, one of the most prominent figures in intelligence testing, called the combination of multilingual instruction and pictorial directions a development that moved nonverbal assessment "many paces forward."
Subtests and the two batteries
The WNV draws from a pool of six subtests and assembles them differently depending on age. Pearson publishes two versions.
• Four-subtest battery (about 45 minutes): children aged 4 to 7 complete Matrices, Coding, Object Assembly, and Recognition. Examinees aged 8 to 21 complete Matrices, Coding, Spatial Span, and Picture Arrangement.
• Two-subtest brief battery (15 to 20 minutes): children aged 4 to 7 complete Matrices and Recognition. Examinees aged 8 to 21 complete Matrices and Spatial Span. The brief form yields a single ability score and is meant for screening or re-evaluation rather than full diagnostic work.
Matrices, the one subtest given at every age, presents an incomplete geometric pattern and asks the examinee to choose the piece that completes it. This is the same "fluid reasoning" format used in Naglieri's own group-administered measure, the Naglieri Nonverbal Ability Test, which we cover in our article on what the NNAT test is. The remaining tasks sample visual memory (Recognition, Spatial Span), visual-motor speed (Coding), and visual organization (Object Assembly, Picture Arrangement), so the four-subtest full scale reflects more than pattern reasoning alone.
Who the WNV is designed for
Pearson lists several intended populations: deaf and hard-of-hearing examinees, English language learners and recent immigrants, individuals with language disorders or delays, and gifted students from linguistically diverse backgrounds. The publisher's validity studies back up the core use case. In special group studies reported with the test, deaf examinees earned average full scale scores of about 101 to 103, essentially at the population mean, and a sample of English language learners averaged about 102. On a verbally loaded test, those same groups would be expected to score well below their true ability.
The United Kingdom's National Deaf Children's Society notes that the WNV was created specifically for individuals for whom English is not a first language, deaf individuals, and those with language difficulties, while cautioning that it can only be administered by qualified practitioner psychologists and that other assessments may still be needed to understand why a child is struggling. In the United States it is likewise a restricted clinical instrument, so parents cannot buy or administer it themselves.
How the WNV relates to other Wechsler and nonverbal tests
Within the Wechsler line, the WNV is the specialist, and the WISC-V and WAIS are the generalists. The WISC-V (ages 6 to 16) offers a "Nonverbal Index," which Pearson describes as a composite derived from six subtests that do not require verbal responses, useful for minimizing expressive language demands. The instructions for those subtests are still spoken, however, so the WISC-V option helps a child who understands English but does not speak well, while the WNV goes further and removes spoken instructions too. For adults, the WAIS IQ test remains the standard comprehensive battery; publisher data report that the WNV four-subtest full scale correlated .72 with WAIS-III full scale IQ in a small comparison sample, a solid but imperfect overlap that reflects the narrower content of a nonverbal measure.
Outside the Wechsler family, the WNV competes with other individually administered nonverbal instruments such as the UNIT and the Leiter scales, and with group screeners like the NNAT. Its distinctive selling points are the pictorial directions, the familiar Wechsler task formats, and norms for both the United States and Canada.
The honest limitations of nonverbal-only measurement
A nonverbal test reduces language demands. It does not erase culture, and it does not measure everything intelligence tests are supposed to measure.
• Nonverbal is not culture-free: exposure to puzzles, drawing conventions, testing situations, and even the habit of working quickly all vary across cultures. In a large study published in Gifted Child Quarterly, David Lohman and colleagues found that English language learners still scored about 0.5 to 0.67 standard deviations lower than non-ELL classmates on three well-known nonverbal tests, and that the nonverbal scores predicted ELL students' academic achievement poorly. • Verbal ability goes unmeasured: vocabulary, verbal reasoning, and general knowledge are among the best single indicators of general intelligence and the strongest predictors of school achievement. A WNV full scale score simply contains no information about them. For an examinee who could be tested verbally, a nonverbal-only score discards useful signal.
• A narrower sample of behavior: with four subtests (or two, in the brief form), the WNV samples fewer distinct abilities than a full WISC-V or WAIS, so its full scale score carries somewhat more measurement error and less diagnostic detail.
• Aging norms: the WNV was published in 2006 and has not been revised, so its norms are now nearly two decades old. Examiners have to weigh that against the fresher norms of newer instruments.
None of this makes the WNV a weak test. It makes it a tool with a defined job: estimating general ability when language would otherwise contaminate the score.
Where that leaves adults who want a rigorous score
The WNV stops at age 21, and school-based testing stops earlier than that for most people. An adult who simply wants a precise, norm-referenced picture of their own cognitive ability has a more convenient option.
