The TABE test (Tests of Adult Basic Education) is an academic achievement assessment for adult learners, published by Data Recognition Corporation (DRC). Adult education programs use it to place students at the right instructional level in reading, math, and language, to document skill gains for federal reporting, and to support workforce and correctional education. The current edition is TABE 13&14, which has been approved by the National Reporting System for adult education; its widely recognized predecessor is TABE 11&12. What the TABE measures
The TABE's core subjects are reading, mathematics, and language, with a writing component also available, all aligned to the College and Career Readiness standards used in adult education. Rather than one exam for everyone, the TABE comes in five overlapping difficulty levels, labeled L, E, M, D, and A, spanning content from beginning literacy through advanced, high-school-equivalency material. A short "locator" test is given first to route each examinee to the level that fits their current skills, so a beginning reader and a near-graduate are not staring at the same booklet.
Delivery is flexible by design. Online testing runs on DRC's INSIGHT assessment platform, paper-based administration is supported with web-based scanning for reports, and a TABE Offline option provides a fully offline, secure testing experience for correctional facilities and rural sites without reliable internet. TABE 13&14 and TABE 11&12
TABE editions ship as parallel-form pairs, two equivalent versions of the same test, which lets programs pre-test with one form and post-test with the other so score gains reflect learning rather than memory of specific questions. DRC's current pair is TABE 13&14, which the company announces as approved by the National Reporting System (NRS). TABE 11&12, the prior pair, remains the edition many programs and study guides still describe, so expect to see both names in circulation. Who uses the TABE
DRC states that adult education professionals rely on TABE more than any other adult assessment in the country, and its user base runs from educators and program administrators to employers making hiring, training, and advancement decisions.
• Adult education programs: Federally funded programs under the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) must report student progress to the NRS using approved assessments. TABE scores map onto NRS educational functioning levels, and pre-test to post-test growth counts as the "measurable skills gains" that drive program accountability and funding.
• Workforce and employers: DRC positions the TABE for hiring decisions, training, and employee advancement where basic academic skills matter.
• Correctional education: TABE Offline supports secure testing on computers with no internet connection, which is why the TABE is a fixture of prison education programs.

How TABE scoring works
The TABE reports "scale scores," numbers on a common scale that allow comparison across test forms and levels, and those scores map onto the NRS's educational functioning levels, which run from beginning literacy through high-school-equivalency skill bands. There is no pass or fail. A score places you at a level, sets a baseline, and gives your program a target for growth; the exact cut ranges are published in program guidance rather than something a test taker needs to memorize. Some programs do attach consequences to levels (a training program may require a minimum level, for example), but that is the program's policy, not a property of the test.
Is the TABE an IQ test?
No, and the TABE is the clearest illustration in all of testing of why the distinction matters. An IQ test targets stable underlying abilities, and a well-built one is designed so that scores change little with re-testing. The TABE is deliberately the opposite: it measures current skills, and it is meant to be taken again after instruction so that improvement can be documented. Score gains are the program's success metric, not a validity problem. A low TABE score means those skills have not been built yet; it says nothing about a learner's ability, and adult learners routinely post large gains with instruction. Preparing for the TABE
Because the TABE measures learned skills, preparation is simply learning, and it works. DRC itself offers TABE Edge, a practice and study tool, and official sample practice items for recent editions. One caution from the measurement side: a meta-analysis of retesting found that repeated exposure to identical test forms inflates scores, which is exactly why the TABE ships parallel forms and uses a locator to assign levels. Practice to build the skills, not to memorize a form.

• Focus on your weakest subject: Reading, math, and language are scored separately, and programs look at the profile, not just one number.
