The i-Ready Diagnostic is a "computer-adaptive test" of reading and mathematics achievement published by Curriculum Associates and administered in schools from kindergarten through Grade 12, usually three times per year. It adjusts question difficulty as a student answers, then reports a scale score and a grade-level placement such as "Early On Grade Level" or "One Grade Level Below." It is an achievement screener that measures performance against grade-level academic standards. It is not an IQ test, and a placement says nothing direct about a child's intelligence. This article explains how the adaptive algorithm works, what the scores and placement levels mean, how schools use the results, and what parents should and should not read into them. One naming note: Curriculum Associates is renaming the assessment i-Ready Inform as of the 2026-2027 school year, so families may see either label on reports.
What the i-Ready Diagnostic covers
Curriculum Associates reports that i-Ready is used by more than one million educators and supports roughly 17 million students in the United States. The Diagnostic component assesses two subjects, each broken into "domains," which are broad skill areas that receive their own sub-scores.
• Reading: six domains covering Phonological Awareness, Phonics, High-Frequency Words, Vocabulary, Comprehension of Literature, and Comprehension of Informational Text.
• Mathematics: four domains covering Number and Operations, Algebra and Algebraic Thinking, Measurement and Data, and Geometry.
The assessment is available in English and Spanish and runs in a web browser. According to the National Center on Intensive Intervention, a screening-tools review center funded by the U.S. Department of Education, each administration takes approximately 45 minutes per subject and can be broken into multiple sittings.
How the adaptive algorithm works
The publisher describes the i-Ready Diagnostic as a computer-adaptive test that "matches the difficulty of test questions to the proficiency level of each student." When a student answers correctly, the next questions get harder; after incorrect answers, they get easier. The algorithm keeps adjusting until it homes in on the difficulty level that is right for that student, which yields a precise estimate from far fewer questions than a fixed-form test would need.
A few design details from Curriculum Associates' own documentation are worth knowing. The very first Diagnostic a student takes starts one grade level below their chronological grade, and later administrations start approximately where the previous one left off. The test deliberately draws items from above and below the student's enrolled grade, so most children will see material their teacher has never taught. The test is also calibrated so that a typical student answers only about half of the questions correctly. That is intentional: answering roughly 50 percent right is what gives the algorithm the most information about where a student's proficiency actually sits.
The score is calculated from the difficulty of the items a student saw and how they responded, using an "item response theory" framework, a statistical approach that weights questions by difficulty rather than simply counting correct answers. Scale scores and placement levels
Every completed Diagnostic produces an overall "scale score" between 100 and 800, plus a scale score for each domain. The scale is vertical, meaning it spans kindergarten through Grade 12 on one continuous ruler, which is what makes growth visible from one administration to the next.
Scale scores are then translated into placements. Curriculum Associates explains that its placement levels are "criterion-referenced," meaning they compare a student's performance to what students are expected to know at each grade level rather than to other test takers. Reports show placements in two forms.
• Absolute placements: the grade level associated with the performance itself. A third grader performing like a typical first grader receives an absolute placement of Grade 1.
• Relative placements: the same performance expressed against the child's enrolled grade. That same third grader would be placed Two Grade Levels Below. The full set of relative levels is Mid, Late, or Above Grade Level; Early On Grade Level; One Grade Level Below; Two Grade Levels Below; and Three or More Grade Levels Below.
The publisher's placement documentation is more moderate in tone than the labels suggest. "One Grade Level Below" is defined as approaching grade-level expectations and likely to benefit from ordinary grade-level instruction with targeted support, and "Early On Grade Level" means a student has partially met grade-level expectations. Alongside these criterion-referenced placements, reports also include "norm-referenced" information in the form of percentile ranks, which compare the student with a nationally representative sample of same-grade peers tested in the same season.
How teachers and districts use the results
Schools typically administer the Diagnostic three times per year, in fall, winter, and spring, with a recommended 12 to 18 weeks of instruction between administrations. The National Center on Intensive Intervention lists the i-Ready Diagnostic on its academic screening tools chart and rates its reliability evidence as convincing across grades, with classification accuracy strongest for winter and spring administrations.
In practice, teachers use domain-level placements to group students and target instruction, and schools use relative placements as a universal screen to flag students who may need intervention, often within a response-to-intervention framework. The software also assigns each student a personalized lesson path in the companion i-Ready instruction product, and administrators track growth between administrations and compare percentiles across schools. Reading results come with a Lexile measure and mathematics results with a Quantile measure, which help match students to appropriately difficult texts and problems.
Is the i-Ready Diagnostic an IQ test?
No. The i-Ready Diagnostic measures academic achievement relative to grade-level standards, while an IQ test measures general cognitive ability against age-based population norms on the familiar scale with a mean of 100 and a standard deviation of 15. The two kinds of tests correlate, because more capable students tend to learn academic content faster, but they answer different questions. An achievement screener asks what a child has learned so far; an intelligence test asks how strong a child's underlying reasoning abilities are compared with age peers. The distinction matters when interpreting growth. Achievement scores are supposed to rise with teaching, and they do. In a meta-analysis of over 600,000 participants published in Psychological Science, Stuart Ritchie and Elliot Tucker-Drob found that each additional year of education is associated with a gain of roughly one to five points on cognitive test scores, with the largest effects on achievement-type measures, and the evidence could not establish whether such gains reach the deeper general ability that IQ tests target. A student who moves from Two Grade Levels Below to On Grade Level has genuinely learned academic content, which is exactly what the instrument is built to detect. That movement is weak evidence about any change in underlying cognitive ability, and no placement should be read as an intelligence estimate.
What parents should and should not read into placements
The i-Ready Diagnostic has real strengths: it is quick for what it delivers, its reliability evidence is rated convincing by independent reviewers, and its placements map onto concrete instructional decisions. It also has limits that the labels on a parent report do not always convey.
• A placement describes a score, not a child: it summarizes performance on one test on one day, and scores move with effort, sleep, attention, and luck as well as learning.
• Below-grade placements are common and actionable: by design the categories flag students for support, and the publisher's own definition of One Grade Level Below is a student approaching expectations who mostly needs regular instruction with targeted help.
• The test is supposed to feel hard: because students answer about half the items incorrectly, children sometimes come home convinced they failed. Explaining this design in advance, as Curriculum Associates advises teachers to do, prevents discouragement and rushing.
• Young children's fall scores are the least dependable: the screening evidence for kindergarten and Grade 1 fall administrations is weaker than for later grades and seasons, so a surprising early placement deserves patience rather than alarm.
• Trends beat snapshots: three administrations per year exist precisely so that educators can look at growth. One low score is a prompt to watch and support; a repeated pattern across administrations is meaningful information.
The most important thing not to read into a placement is a verdict on intelligence or long-term potential. A screener tied to grade-level standards cannot deliver that verdict, and it is not trying to.
