What is the GMADE? The Group Mathematics Assessment and Diagnostic Evaluation explained

The GMADE (Group Mathematics Assessment and Diagnostic Evaluation) is a group-administered, "norm-referenced" diagnostic mathematics test, meaning scores are interpreted by comparing each student to a national sample of same-age or same-grade peers. Authored by Kathleen T. Williams, PhD, and published by Pearson in 2004, it measures math skills in three areas (Concepts and Communication, Operations and Computation, and Process and Application) across nine levels spanning kindergarten through grade 12 and adult examinees. Because a teacher can test an entire class at once in roughly 50 to 90 minutes, schools have used it to screen whole classrooms, place students, and track growth from fall to spring. Pearson has since retired the GMADE, but it remains a useful case study in how group diagnostic testing works, and its scores still appear in older student records and published research. This article covers what the test measures, how it is administered and scored, how its results connect to instruction, and how it differs from individually administered diagnostics like the KeyMath-3.
What the GMADE measures
According to Pearson's product documentation, the GMADE assesses core mathematics skills in three areas, each measured by its own subtest. The test was built around the standards of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) and, per the publisher, was correlated to the NCTM Focal Points, which described the most important math content at each grade.
• Concepts and Communication: the language, vocabulary, and symbolic representations of mathematics. Items check whether a student understands what mathematical terms and notation actually mean, which is the foundation for following instruction in class.
• Operations and Computation: the mechanics of arithmetic, including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division, with more advanced procedures at higher levels. This is the area most people picture when they think of a math test.
• Process and Application: applying concepts and operations to solve word problems drawn from areas such as number, algebra, and geometry. Research teams often treat this subtest as a general measure of mathematical problem solving; Pearson's materials label it "Process & Application," while some published studies refer to it as "Process and Applications."
Because each area is scored separately, the profile matters as much as the total. A student who computes accurately but stumbles on word problems presents a very different instructional picture than one who understands the language of math yet makes systematic arithmetic errors.
Levels, grades, and group administration
The GMADE was organized into nine levels: R, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, M, and H. The lettered levels anchor the range, with Level R aimed at beginning students, Level M at middle school, and Level H at high school, and Pearson listed the overall range as kindergarten through grade 12 plus adults. Each level had two parallel forms, A and B, so a school could test in fall and spring without reusing identical items. Levels were tied to difficulty rather than strictly to grade placement, which allowed out-of-level testing: a struggling seventh grader could take a lower level to get a more precise measure of what they actually knew.
The defining feature is in the name. Unlike a clinical assessment given one-on-one, the GMADE was designed for "whole group administration," with a full battery taking about 50 to 90 minutes with paper and pencil. Pearson's materials emphasized the time savings, and the practical implication is real: an examiner giving an individual diagnostic test can see perhaps five or six students in a school day, while one teacher proctoring the GMADE could screen thirty students in a single session. For a school that wants to know where every student in a grade stands at the start of the year, group administration is the difference between a feasible plan and an impossible one. The tradeoff is that a group test cannot observe how an individual student reasons, probe wrong answers, or adapt to a student's responses in real time.
What GMADE scores mean
The GMADE reported the standard family of norm-referenced scores. According to the publisher, results could be expressed as standard scores, "percentiles" (the percentage of the norm group scoring at or below a given score), "stanines" (a nine-point scale where 5 is average), normal curve equivalents, grade equivalents, and age equivalents, with both fall and spring norms available on an age or grade basis.
One score type deserves special mention. The "Growth Scale Value" (GSV) is a single continuous scale that runs across all levels of the test, so a student's progress can be tracked from kindergarten through grade 12 even as they move up through different test levels and forms. Pearson promoted GSVs, together with the parallel forms, as the mechanism for monitoring growth from grade to grade. This kind of vertical scale is what makes a fall-to-spring comparison meaningful rather than an apples-to-oranges exercise.
The usual cautions apply. A grade equivalent of 6.2 earned by a fourth grader does not mean the child is ready for sixth-grade math; it means the child answered fourth-grade material the way a typical early sixth grader would. And any single administration carries measurement error, so a score is best read as a range rather than a point.
From diagnosis to instruction
Pearson positioned the GMADE explicitly as a diagnostic-to-instruction system rather than a standalone score report. The publisher's stated uses included determining placement, analyzing strengths and weaknesses, planning instruction, and monitoring growth, supported by four group reports and four individual student reports. A companion product, the GMADE Math Resource Library, provided reproducible activities keyed to test results, which Pearson described as establishing a direct link from test results to intervention. That design maps naturally onto the screening and progress-monitoring layers of "RTI" (response to intervention) and "MTSS" (multi-tiered system of supports) frameworks, where schools test everyone briefly, intervene with those flagged, and retest to check growth.
The test also earned a place in serious education research. An Institute of Education Sciences project page describes a national cluster-randomized trial of the Everyday Mathematics curriculum in which students took the GMADE as a fall pretest and spring posttest each year, with the spring scores serving as the study's outcome measure. In a separate cluster-randomized trial published in the Journal of Educational Psychology, Asha Jitendra and colleagues used the GMADE Process and Applications subtest (Level M, Form A) to measure seventh graders' overall problem solving in a study of schema-based instruction. When independent research teams choose a test as their outcome measure, that reflects a judgment that the instrument is standardized, norm-referenced, and administrable at scale.
How the GMADE differs from individual diagnostics, and where it stands today
The clearest contrast is with the KeyMath-3 Diagnostic Assessment, another Pearson mathematics test. According to the publisher, the KeyMath-3 is individually administered, covers kindergarten through age 21, and measures conceptual knowledge, computation, and problem solving through an examiner working one-on-one with a student. The two tests sample similar content, but they serve different purposes: the GMADE surveys an entire class efficiently, while an individual diagnostic yields a deeper, observation-rich evaluation of one student. In practice the tools were complementary. A group screener flags the students who need a closer look, and an individual test like the KeyMath-3 or the TEMA-3 for early mathematics ability provides that closer look. The GMADE is also narrower than broad group achievement batteries such as the Iowa Assessments, which cover reading, language, and other subjects alongside math but with less diagnostic detail in any one of them.
Status matters for anyone encountering the test now. Pearson's US assessment store currently states that it no longer publishes the GRADE and GMADE, and it points customers toward alternatives such as aimswebPlus and the WIAT-4. Schools that once used the GMADE have largely migrated to newer computer-adaptive screeners, and GMADE scores you encounter today will typically come from older records or published studies.
Math achievement and cognitive ability are related but distinct
The GMADE measures mathematics achievement, meaning learned skills and knowledge, and not intelligence. Achievement and cognitive ability correlate substantially, and a low math score can reflect limited instruction, missed prerequisites, math anxiety, or a genuine learning difficulty, so the two kinds of tests answer different questions.
