What is the Verbal Comprehension Index (VCI)? Reading the score on a Wechsler report

The Verbal Comprehension Index (VCI) is a composite score on the Wechsler intelligence scales that summarises how well someone understands words, reasons with verbal concepts, and puts knowledge into language. It is reported on a "standard score" metric, meaning a scale with a mean of 100 and a standard deviation of 15, which is the same metric the Full Scale IQ uses. Pearson, the publisher, treats index scores from 90 to 109 as typically average. A VCI is not an IQ on its own. This article covers which subtests produce it on each current edition, what it is measuring, what depresses it for reasons that have nothing to do with ability, and how much error sits around the number.

The label has been stable since 2003. The recipe behind it has not, so two reports that both say "VCI" may rest on different tasks.

• WISC-V (2014, ages 6:0 to 16:11): the VCI is derived from two subtests, Similarities and Vocabulary. Pearson's interpretive report describes Information and Comprehension as secondary subtests administered "in addition to the two subtests that contribute to the VCI," with all four together producing a separate ancillary score, the Verbal (Expanded Crystallized) Index.

• WAIS-5 (2024, ages 16:0 to 90:11): the same two-subtest structure. Pearson's published test framework lists Similarities and Vocabulary under Verbal Comprehension in the primary index scales, with Information and Comprehension appearing only in the wider Full Scale and ancillary groupings.

• WAIS-IV (2008): three core verbal subtests fed the VCI. Pearson's own WAIS-IV to WAIS-5 comparison flyer lists Similarities, Vocabulary and Information as core, and Comprehension as supplemental.

• WISC-IV (2003): three core subtests again, but a different three. Pearson's WISC-IV technical report gives the composition as "Similarities, Vocabulary, and Comprehension (Supplemental: Information, Word Reasoning)."

• WPPSI-IV: composition depends on the child's age. For ages 2:6 to 3:11 the VCI comes from Receptive Vocabulary and Information; for ages 4:0 to 7:7 it comes from Information and Similarities.

Notice what Information and Comprehension do across those rows. On WISC-IV, Comprehension was core and Information supplemental; on WAIS-IV that was reversed; on WISC-V and WAIS-5 both are secondary. A VCI of 108 from a 2010 WAIS-IV is therefore not quite the same measurement as a VCI of 108 from a 2025 WAIS-5, which matters when a report compares a current score against an old one. Our guide to the Full Scale IQ covers the same edition problem at the whole-battery level.

Pearson's wording is worth reading closely. The WISC-V interpretive report says the VCI "measured Sample's ability to access and apply acquired word knowledge," reflecting the ability "to verbalize meaningful concepts, think about verbal information, and express herself using words." The operative word is acquired.

That places the index squarely on one side of a distinction Raymond Cattell drew in 1963, between fluid ability and "crystallized" ability, the latter being what a person has built up from prior learning and acculturation. Horn and Cattell refined and tested the split three years later. The Cattell-Horn-Carroll framework that grew out of that work, and out of Carroll's survey of the factor-analytic literature, remains the common vocabulary for describing what cognitive batteries measure. Crystallized intelligence is conventionally abbreviated Gc.

Pearson names the connection outright. The four-subtest ancillary verbal score on WISC-V and WAIS-5 is called the Verbal (Expanded Crystallized) Index, and the WISC-V technical report describes it as a broad measure of "crystallized intelligence" alongside verbal expression, concept formation, abstract reasoning, lexical knowledge and practical judgment. For the ability itself rather than the score, see our explainer on verbal reasoning.

The objection in the video above is one I hear constantly, and the fair version of it lands. If Gc is acquired, the VCI is partly a record of what a person has been taught and has had the chance to learn. The evidence supports that reading. Ritchie and Tucker-Drob meta-analysed 142 effect sizes from 42 quasi-experimental data sets covering more than 600,000 participants and found consistent evidence that an additional year of education raises cognitive ability by roughly 1 to 5 IQ points, with effects present on all the broad ability categories they studied. Kan and colleagues, analysing 23 twin studies, reported the related and more uncomfortable finding that culture-loaded subtests tend to show higher heritability coefficients in adults than culture-reduced ones, and that how much a subtest shares with general intelligence is itself a function of its cultural load.

What that argument does not establish is that the VCI measures memorised trivia. Similarities asks for the abstract concept two words share, and Vocabulary asks for a definition produced on the spot. Both require retrieving stored knowledge and then reasoning with it out loud. Schooling raises the score without manufacturing it. The honest position is that a VCI reflects verbal ability and opportunity together, which is why the other four Wechsler indices exist alongside it.

A high VCI indicates well-developed word knowledge, efficient retrieval, and effective verbal problem solving in the language of testing. It says nothing about a person's worth, and it is not a diagnosis. A low VCI is the more consequential number, because several things unrelated to reasoning ability push it down.

• English as an additional language: Sotelo-Dynega and colleagues gave a cognitive battery in English to 61 second-graders identified as limited English proficient and found a linear, inverse relationship between English language proficiency and performance on the tests demanding the most English development and mainstream cultural knowledge. Scores obtained in a language the examinee is still acquiring may simply not be valid to interpret.

• Hearing loss: significant delays in language acquisition are consistently reported for children who are deaf or hard of hearing, and a large multi-state study of 448 children with bilateral hearing loss found vocabulary outcomes varying sharply with how early the loss was identified and treated. A verbal composite built on spoken word knowledge will register that history.

• Limited formal schooling: given the education effect above, years of schooling are a live confound on any crystallized measure, not a footnote to one.

• Expressive language difficulty: every subtest feeding the VCI requires the examinee to speak an answer, so a person who knows the concept but cannot produce it fluently loses points for the wrong reason.

Publishers build alternatives for exactly these cases. Pearson states that the WAIS-5 Nonverbal Index "includes subtests from four of the five cognitive domains that contribute to the FSIQ (Verbal Comprehension is not included)" and "offers a potentially more appropriate estimate of overall ability for examinees with substantial expressive language impairment." The WPPSI-IV Nonverbal Index is described as useful for children "who are English language learners, deaf or hard of hearing, or suspected of having language or autistic spectrum disorders." When one of these applies, a nonverbal battery is often the fairer instrument, and a VCI should be read as a description of current verbal functioning rather than of capacity.

No index score is a point value. Pearson's published WISC-V sample report gives a VCI of 121 with a standard error of measurement of 4.74 and a 95% confidence interval of 112 to 127. The WAIS-5 sample report gives a VCI of 124 with a standard error of 4.50 and an interval of 115 to 130. Those bands are roughly 15 points wide, which is one full standard deviation.

Pearson is blunt about why. Scores "can be influenced by motivation, attention, interests, and opportunities for learning," and "some scores might be slightly higher or lower if Sample was tested again at another time." A VCI of 97 and a VCI of 103 are not meaningfully different results, and treating a two-point gap between indices as a profile is reading noise. Our article on the confidence interval around an IQ score works through the arithmetic.

On the normal curve the anchors are worth memorising: a VCI of 100 sits at the 50th percentile, 115 at roughly the 84th, 130 at roughly the 98th. A percentile rank is a position among same-age peers in the norm sample, not a percentage of items correct, and the scale is not equal-interval.

The VCI earns its place because verbal ability is central to schooling and work, and because it is measured reliably. It remains one of five primary indices for a reason: a composite built from two or three tasks in a single modality cannot stand in for general ability, and a report quoting a VCI without the rest of the profile has told you very little.

If you want a broad picture of your own cognitive profile rather than a single verbal number, the Reasoning and Intelligence Online Test is a professionally developed IQ test built for adults 18 and over by RIOT IQ with psychometrician Dr. Russell T. Warne. It runs 15 subtests across six cognitive indices covering verbal reasoning, fluid reasoning, spatial ability, working memory, processing speed and reaction time, and reports on the mean-100, standard-deviation-15 scale. It does not replace an individually administered diagnostic evaluation.

No. It is one of five primary index scores on the current Wechsler batteries. It uses the same mean-100, SD-15 metric as the Full Scale IQ, which makes the two easy to confuse, but the VCI covers one cognitive domain rather than general ability.

Pearson treats index scores from 90 to 109 as typically average, with the primary index range running from 45 to 155. Because scores are norm-referenced against same-age peers, "good" means high relative to the norm group, and should always be read with its confidence interval.

On WISC-V and WAIS-5 it is Similarities and Vocabulary. On WAIS-IV it was Similarities, Vocabulary and Information; on WISC-IV it was Similarities, Vocabulary and Comprehension. On WPPSI-IV it depends on the child's age band.

Not necessarily. Limited exposure to the test language, hearing loss, interrupted schooling and expressive language difficulty all depress a verbal composite without indicating weak reasoning. A nonverbal index is often the more appropriate estimate in those situations.

Only with caution. The subtests feeding the index changed between WISC-IV and WISC-V and between WAIS-IV and WAIS-5, and the norms were restandardised each time, so the same number carries a different meaning in an older report.
