Kobe Bryant had no verified IQ score. The circulating "144" is unsourced; his one reported number, a 1080 SAT, converts to roughly 113 with wide error.

Kobe Bryant never had a publicly documented IQ score. The "144" that circulates online traces only to celebrity-IQ listicle sites that cite no test, record, or interview, and the one credibly reported number in his file is an SAT score of 1080, which converts to an IQ estimate of roughly 113 with a wide margin of error, nowhere near 144. What is verified needs no invented number: fluency in Italian and Spanish alongside English, a 2018 Academy Award for the animated short Dear Basketball, Olympic gold with Team USA, and one of the most successful athlete investments on record. This article traces the claim, works through the SAT arithmetic honestly, and reviews what the record actually shows.
Where the "144" comes from
The trail is short and circular. The site sociosite.net headlines "Kobe Bryant's IQ is 144" with no source, citation, or testing record of any kind. Another site, calendar-australia.com, repeats the figure, and its "complete answer" link points straight back to sociosite.net. No interview, biography, contemporaneous news report, school record, or statement by Bryant or anyone around him has ever surfaced to support the number.
The listicle sites cannot even agree with each other. Numbers in circulation include 144, 127, 114, and 113, a 31-point spread on the same person. That spread is itself the tell that no test record exists: each site is guessing, and each guess then gets quoted somewhere else as fact.
The SAT score, and what it can and cannot say
One number in Bryant's file is credibly reported. Wikipedia states that his "skills and SAT score of 1080 would have ensured admission to any college," a sentence cited to a 2010 Sports Illustrated retrospective by Ian Thomsen. That is reporting, worth taking seriously as reporting; it is a widely repeated figure rather than a released score report, and no contemporaneous source from 1996 has surfaced.

Even taking the 1080 at face value, converting it to IQ produces an estimate rather than a measurement. Frey and Detterman, who published equations for converting SAT scores to estimated IQs, found the SAT correlated with general cognitive ability at .82 in a large national sample and considerably lower in a range-restricted college sample. Sites that run Bryant's reported 1080 through that arithmetic land near 113, and the more careful ones admit a margin of about 18 points in either direction. The honest output of the same input is a wide range centered in the low 110s, and nothing in that arithmetic reaches 144.
There is a further layer of slop: Bryant would have taken the SAT around 1995 or 1996, spanning the April 1995 recentering of the SAT scale, and no source says which scale the reported 1080 sits on. So the two honest statements are these: the internet's high number is unsourced, and the internet's "scientific" numbers are arithmetic performed on an unverified score. Neither one is Kobe Bryant's IQ.
What the verified record shows
Bryant's documented record makes the invented numbers unnecessary.
• Three languages: After his father's playing career moved the family to Rieti, Italy, when Bryant was six, he grew up bilingual and was fluent in English, Italian, and Spanish as an adult. He gave interviews in Italian, answered Univision's questions in Spanish, and said he sharpened his Spanish "watching novelas" with his wife and mother-in-law.
• An Academy Award: In 2018 Bryant won the Oscar for Best Animated Short Film for Dear Basketball, built on the poem he wrote at his retirement, animated by Glen Keane with music by John Williams.
• Team USA: He won Olympic gold medals with the United States national team at the 2008 and 2012 Games.
• The BodyArmor investment: Beginning in 2014, Bryant put roughly $6 million into the sports-drink company for about 10 percent of it. ESPN reported the stake was worth approximately $200 million after Coca-Cola bought a minority stake in 2018, and when Coca-Cola acquired the rest in 2021, Forbes, citing The Wall Street Journal, reported his estate stood to collect roughly $400 million.
• Straight to the NBA: He went directly from Lower Merion High School to the 1996 NBA draft at 17. Per the same Sports Illustrated reporting, his skills and test score would have ensured admission to any college; he chose the draft instead.
Basketball IQ is not the same construct
The phrase "basketball IQ" followed Bryant throughout his career, and it describes something real: pattern recognition, obsessive film study, and tactical anticipation on the court. That is trained domain expertise. A psychometric IQ is a standardized score of general ability, produced by a normed test under controlled conditions. Elite game cognition is evidence of the first, and it neither requires nor reveals a specific value of the second.
The same claim pattern follows his fellow Lakers great Shaquille O'Neal, as well as Michael Jordan and LeBron James: documented careers, undocumented numbers, and confident listicles filling the gap.
What a real IQ score requires
A modern IQ is a "deviation IQ": a score marking your position within a reference group, on a scale with a mean of 100 and a "standard deviation" (a measure of how spread out scores are) of 15. Roughly two-thirds of people score between 85 and 115, and about 2 percent score above 130. A meaningful score requires a proctored, standardized administration of a normed test and a reported margin of error. No such record exists publicly for Bryant, and even a documented adolescent score would be a snapshot: on the same test, the correlation between scores at ages 11 and 90 in the Lothian Birth Cohort was .54, or .67 after correcting for range restriction.
If you are curious what a defensible score looks like for yourself, the RIOT IQ test (the Reasoning and Intelligence Online Test) is normed on adults 18 and older and publishes the margin of error for each of its versions. You can start with the free version, which takes about 8 minutes, and move to a longer version if you want a tighter estimate.
Frequently asked questions
Is Kobe Bryant's IQ really 144?
No. The 144 appears only on celebrity-IQ sites that cite nothing or cite each other, and no test record has ever surfaced. Circulating numbers for Bryant span 113 to 144, which is itself evidence that nobody has a record.
What was Kobe Bryant's SAT score?
An SAT score of 1080 is widely reported, tracing to a 2010 Sports Illustrated retrospective. It is a reported figure, and no released score report or 1996 source exists publicly.
Does a 1080 SAT equal an IQ of 113?
Only as a rough estimate. Published SAT-to-IQ conversions land near 113 for that input, with a margin of about 18 points either way, and the underlying score itself is unverified.
How many languages did Kobe Bryant speak?
Three. He was fluent in English, Italian, and Spanish, a legacy of his childhood years in Italy, and gave media interviews in all three.
