What Is Jodie Foster's IQ?

The number appears across the usual celebrity-IQ circuit. One site announces "Jodie Foster Has a 132 IQ" while citing only other outlets that repeat the same figure. Another lists "IQ: 132" with no citation, above a footer admitting its scores are "for entertainment purposes only." A CBS News photo gallery says she "reportedly has an IQ of 132," and "reportedly" is doing all of the work: no report is ever named.

The same gallery also illustrates why these lists are unreliable on details that are checkable. It describes Foster as graduating "cum laude" from Yale, while the better-sourced record, including an Oxford University Press study of her career and the Yale Alumni Magazine, has her graduating magna cum laude. When a list is wrong about the honors printed on a diploma, its unsourced IQ figures deserve no more trust.

Foster's documented history reads like a case study in verbal precocity. By her family's account, repeated across decades of profiles including a 1991 New York Times Magazine piece, she taught herself to read at age three. She attended the Lycée Français de Los Angeles, a French-language prep school, and at her 1980 graduation delivered the valedictorian address for the school's French division. Her French has been good enough to act in French-language films.

She then studied literature at Yale, focusing on African-American literature, and graduated magna cum laude in 1985 while already a working actress. Yale's own institutional records show the university awarded her an honorary Doctor of Fine Arts degree in 1997, twelve years after her bachelor's.

Her professional record is just as documented. Her career began at age three with a 1965 Coppertone television advertisement. She first appeared at the Cannes Film Festival at 13, in May 1976, with Taxi Driver. She has won two Academy Awards for Best Actress, for The Accused at the 1989 ceremony and for The Silence of the Lambs at the 1992 ceremony. In 2021 the Festival de Cannes awarded her an honorary Palme d'Or; the festival's announcement also notes that an asteroid bears her name, an homage to her role in Contact.

Academic achievement is real evidence about cognitive ability. In a five-year study of more than 70,000 English schoolchildren, Deary and colleagues found a 0.81 correlation between a latent general intelligence factor and a latent factor of school achievement. Graduating magna cum laude from Yale is therefore strong probabilistic evidence of high ability, stronger than exists for most names on celebrity IQ lists.

But group-level correlation cannot be run in reverse for one person. A transcript maps to a range of plausible scores, never to a point. An IQ scale has a mean of 100 and a "standard deviation", a measure of how spread out scores are, of 15; about 2 percent of people score above 130. A "132" sounds plausible for Foster, and that plausibility is exactly why an invented number in that range circulates unchallenged.
