What Is Matt Damon's IQ?
No verified IQ score for Matt Damon exists. Celebrity listicles put his IQ at 160, some say 143, and none of them cites a test, a date, or a source; no interview appears to exist in which Damon claims any number himself. The figure looks borrowed from Will Hunting, the fictional genius he co-wrote and played. What is documented is a different kind of impressive: four years studying English at Harvard, a screenplay that began as a class assignment, and an Academy Award for writing it.

Where the "Matt Damon IQ 160" claim comes from

Chase the number to its sources and you find celebrity IQ listicles citing each other. One site states flatly that "Matt Damon's IQ is 160"; another hedges to an "estimated IQ: 143-160." A 17-point disagreement is a tell. Real scores come from documented test administrations and do not wobble by a standard deviation depending on which website you ask. No test record, school record, or Damon statement backs any version of the number, which is the same documentary emptiness we found behind most celebrity IQ folklore, including the self-reported case we examine in our article on Kanye West's IQ.

The Good Will Hunting effect

The likeliest origin of the number is a category error: assigning the actor the IQ of his character. Will Hunting is an untutored prodigy who solves graduate-level mathematics between janitorial shifts. The film never assigns him a number either; "160" appears to be what the internet decided an off-the-charts movie genius must score. Writing a convincing genius takes craft and intelligence, and it is a different accomplishment from earning a score on a normed test. Characters do not transfer their attributes to the people who invent them.

What is actually verified about Matt Damon

The documented record needs no embellishment. Damon entered Harvard with the Class of 1992 and studied English; the Harvard Crimson's retrospective confirms he attended from 1988 to 1992 and "dropped out before graduation," leaving famously just shy of his degree as his film career took off. In a playwriting class taught by Anthony Kubiak, he wrote the first draft of the script that became Good Will Hunting as a final project. Harvard's own Gazette confirms the arc: a College playwriting assignment later turned into the Academy Award-winning screenplay. In 2013 the university gave him the Harvard Arts Medal.

Two-column card contrasting Matt Damon's verified record, Harvard English and an Oscar for Good Will Hunting, with the undocumented 160 IQ claim from celebrity listicles

The Oscar that is real

At the 70th Academy Awards on March 23, 1998, Damon and Ben Affleck won Best Original Screenplay for Good Will Hunting, in the Academy's category for a screenplay written directly for the screen. Damon was also nominated for Best Actor the same night for playing Will. He was 27. An Oscar for writing, earned for a script begun in a college course, is strong evidence of unusual talent. It is evidence of a specific, cultivated ability, and no award converts into an IQ score.

How rare is a real 160?

On a modern test with a mean of 100 and a "standard deviation" (a measure of how spread out scores are) of 15, a 160 sits four standard deviations above average: about 1 person in 31,600. Professionally administered adult tests rarely measure that high with any reliability, because norm samples run out of people near the ceiling. Listicles hand out 160s casually; psychology does not. Our guide to what counts as a genius IQ score explains why the label has no scientific definition, and our article on which celebrities are Mensa members shows how rarely celebrity numbers survive contact with documentation.

How to get an IQ score that actually counts

If the Damon case proves anything, it is that achievement and folklore both fail as measurement. A real score comes from a properly normed instrument under standard conditions. The Reasoning and Intelligence Online Test from RIOT IQ reports modern deviation scores with stated confidence intervals, and you can take the free RIOT IQ test here. That yields a number with a paper trail, which is exactly what every celebrity IQ listicle lacks.

Frequently asked questions

What is Matt Damon's IQ?

No verified IQ score for Matt Damon exists. Listicles claim 160, some say 143, and none cites a test, date, or source; no interview was found in which Damon claims a number. The figure appears borrowed from the genius character he wrote and played in Good Will Hunting.

Did Matt Damon really go to Harvard?

Yes. He entered with the Class of 1992 and studied English, leaving in 1992 just short of completing his degree as his film career took off. Harvard later awarded him the 2013 Harvard Arts Medal.

Did Matt Damon write Good Will Hunting himself?

He wrote the first draft as a final project for a Harvard playwriting class taught by Anthony Kubiak, then developed the script with Ben Affleck. The two shared the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay on March 23, 1998.

Is Will Hunting's IQ the same as Matt Damon's?

No. Will Hunting is a fictional prodigy, the film never states a number for him, and Damon has no documented score. Writing a convincing genius is a craft achievement rather than a test result.

How rare is an IQ of 160?

About 1 in 31,600 people on a modern test with mean 100 and SD 15. Most professionally administered adult tests do not measure reliably that high, which is one reason casual "160" claims deserve skepticism.

Was Matt Damon nominated for Best Actor too?

Yes. At the same 1998 ceremony he was nominated for Best Actor for Good Will Hunting; the acting award went elsewhere, and he and Affleck won for the screenplay.
