Mayim Bialik has never published an IQ score, and no verified test result for her exists anywhere on the public record. The numbers attached to her name online, usually somewhere between 150 and 163, are estimates that celebrity IQ sites invented and then borrowed from one another. What is documented is rarer in Hollywood than any of those figures: Bialik holds a real PhD in neuroscience from UCLA, earned in 2007, which makes her one of the few actors who genuinely works in the field her most famous character only pretended to.
Where the 150 to 163 numbers come from
Search for "Mayim Bialik IQ" and you will find confident figures on celebrity-IQ aggregators and ranking lists. The numbers do not agree with each other: one site says 150, another 163, and none names a test, a date, or an examiner. At least one aggregator states plainly that its figure is a speculative estimate compiled from public sources rather than a verified test result. That is the entire evidentiary base. No interview, biography, or official document records Bialik taking a standardized IQ test or reporting a score.
This pattern repeats across nearly every celebrity IQ claim. A number appears on a list without a source, other sites copy it, and repetition starts to look like evidence. Our article on who is the smartest person in the world walks through why almost none of these figures survive checking.
The credential that is actually verified
Bialik's academic record, unlike her rumored scores, is fully documented. After her sitcom Blossom ended, she left acting and earned a bachelor of science degree in neuroscience from UCLA in 2000, with a minor in Hebrew and Jewish studies. She went on to doctoral study in neuroscience at UCLA, took a break in 2005 to return to acting, and completed her PhD in 2007. Her doctoral thesis examined the role of oxytocin and vasopressin, two hormones involved in social bonding, in obsessive-compulsive disorder among adolescents with Prader-Willi syndrome, a genetic condition.
The credential is active, and it did not end at graduation. PBS NOVA has profiled her as a working scientist and educator, noting that she continues to develop curricula and teach young children about science.
Playing a neuroscientist on television
From 1991 to 1995 Bialik played the title character on the NBC sitcom Blossom. From 2010 to 2019 she played neurobiologist Amy Farrah Fowler on CBS's The Big Bang Theory, a role that earned her four Primetime Emmy nominations for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series. The casting had an unusual property: the actor held roughly the credential the character was written to have.
The connection to UCLA stayed live during the show's run. UCLA students who visited the set noted her real science background, and the show's lead actors, Bialik among them, funded STEM scholarships for UCLA students.
The Jeopardy! chapter
After Alex Trebek's death in 2020, Jeopardy! cycled through guest hosts before Sony named Bialik and Ken Jennings permanent hosts in July 2022, splitting the duties. Bialik was nominated for a Primetime Emmy as Outstanding Host for a Game Show in 2023. In December 2023, Sony informed her that she would no longer host the syndicated version, saying it wanted a single host for continuity, and Jennings became sole host. Hosting a quiz show, for what it is worth, is a test of poise and preparation rather than a measurement of the host's intelligence.
What a PhD says about IQ, and what it does not
A doctorate in neuroscience is strong evidence of high cognitive ability. Earning one requires years of coursework, original research, and a defended dissertation, and people who complete that path tend to score well above average on cognitive tests. What a degree cannot do is convert into a specific number. An "IQ score" is the output of a standardized test administered under controlled conditions and scored against a norm sample, a large reference group that represents the population. No diploma, however demanding, produces one. That is why her PhD is verifiable and every circulating score is not: the first is a public record, the second would require a test she has never reported taking. Frequently asked questions
Does Mayim Bialik really have a PhD in neuroscience?
Yes. She earned a BS in neuroscience from UCLA in 2000 and completed her UCLA doctorate in neuroscience in 2007. Her thesis studied obsessive-compulsive behaviors in adolescents with Prader-Willi syndrome.
What is Mayim Bialik's actual IQ score?
No verified score exists. She has never published an IQ test result, and the 150 to 163 figures on celebrity IQ sites are speculative estimates that vary from site to site. Her documented credential is the UCLA neuroscience PhD, not a number.
Is Amy Farrah Fowler's neuroscience background real?
The character is a fictional neurobiologist, but Bialik is the rare actor who shares her character's field. She played Amy Farrah Fowler from 2010 to 2019 while holding a real UCLA neuroscience doctorate, earning four Emmy nominations for the role.
Why did Mayim Bialik stop hosting Jeopardy!?
Sony told her in December 2023 that she would no longer host the syndicated show, saying it wanted one host for continuity, and Ken Jennings became sole host. She had shared hosting duties since July 2022 and was Emmy-nominated as a game show host in 2023.
Is Mayim Bialik in Mensa?
There is no verified record of Bialik being a Mensa member. Her name appears on some celebrity IQ lists, but membership and score claims for her are not sourced to any test or to Mensa itself.
The takeaway
Mayim Bialik's case is the clean version of a messy genre. Most celebrity IQ articles ask you to trust an unsourced number; hers offers a documented credential instead, and the credential is more informative than any single score would be. If you want a real number for yourself rather than an estimate, a properly normed assessment such as the Reasoning and Intelligence Online Test from RIOT IQ is the defensible route; you can take the free IQ test here. A published score from a standardized instrument beats a rumor, whoever the rumor is about.
