What Is Sheldon Cooper's IQ?
Sheldon Cooper's IQ is 187. He states the number himself in The Big Bang Theory Season 1, Episode 11, "The Pancake Batter Anomaly": "Penny, I have an IQ of 187, don't you imagine that if there were a way for me to have had soup at home I would have thought of it?" The show treats 187 as a fixed character fact, Young Sheldon repeats it, and the pilot adds that Sheldon and Leonard share "a combined IQ of 360." Real psychometrics tells a stranger story: no modern, professionally normed test can produce a 187, and Sheldon himself once explained why without meaning to.

Where the show establishes the number

The three places The Big Bang Theory and Young Sheldon state Sheldon Cooper's IQ of 187 and the combined 360

"I have an IQ of 187" (Season 1, Episode 11)

The line arrives in "The Pancake Batter Anomaly," first aired March 31, 2008, when a sick Sheldon has dragged himself out for soup. It is often misattributed to "The Luminous Fish Effect" (S1E4), but that episode contains no IQ reference at all; S1E11 is where the number is spoken.

The combined 360 in the pilot

In the very first episode, Leonard says, "Come on, we have a combined IQ of 360, we should be able to figure out how to get into a stupid building." Fans subtract 187 from 360 to credit Leonard with 173, but that figure is arithmetic inference; no episode states Leonard's IQ on screen.

Young Sheldon keeps it canon

The spinoff holds the number steady 15 years later. In Young Sheldon Season 6, Episode 14, "A Launch Party and a Whole Human Being" (2023), Sheldon says, "But I have an IQ of 187. I'm sure I can figure out whatever's troubling you."

Could a real test ever say 187?

No current instrument reports scores anywhere near it. The WAIS-IV, the flagship adult IQ test of the era when the show aired, reports Full Scale IQs from 40 to 160, a range of plus or minus 4 "standard deviations," the statistic that measures how spread out scores are (here, 15 points per step). A 187 would sit 5.8 standard deviations above the mean of 100. Computed from the normal model with SD 15, that is roughly 1 in 300 million people, which is exactly why no test is normed that high: there are not enough people at that level to norm against. Our guides to test ceiling effects and the highest possible IQ cover the boundary in detail.

Bell curve showing Sheldon Cooper's stated IQ of 187 far beyond the WAIS-IV ceiling of 160
Numbers like 187 do have a historical home. Under Lewis Terman's original 1916 Stanford-Binet, IQ was a "ratio IQ": mental age divided by chronological age, times 100. A 10-year-old performing like an 18.7-year-old scored 187 by simple division. Ratio scoring was retired generations ago in favor of deviation scores, and on a modern scale an adult cannot post a 187 at all. The writers picked a number from a scoring system that no longer exists.

What Sheldon gets right (and wrong) about IQ

In "The Codpiece Topology" (S2E2), Sheldon claims his IQ "cannot be accurately measured by normal tests." As self-flattery, it is peak Sheldon. As psychometrics, it is accidentally correct: any claimed 187 is beyond the range where normal tests measure anything, so no ordinary instrument could confirm or refute it.

The deeper point is that the 187 is writers' shorthand. A single stratospheric number tells the audience "this character is extraordinarily smart" in three syllables, the same device Forrest Gump uses at the other end of the scale with its stated IQ of 75. The performance built on that shorthand was real enough: Jim Parsons won 4 Emmy Awards for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series for the role (2010, 2011, 2013, and 2014).

Frequently asked questions

What is Sheldon Cooper's IQ?

Sheldon Cooper's IQ is 187 in canon. He states the number himself in The Big Bang Theory Season 1, Episode 11, "The Pancake Batter Anomaly," and Young Sheldon repeats it in Season 6, Episode 14.

In which episode does Sheldon say his IQ is 187?

Season 1, Episode 11, "The Pancake Batter Anomaly" (2008), during the scene where a sick Sheldon goes out for soup. The line is often misattributed to "The Luminous Fish Effect" (S1E4), but that episode contains no IQ reference.

What is Leonard's IQ in The Big Bang Theory?

The show never states Leonard's individual IQ. In the pilot, Leonard says he and Sheldon "have a combined IQ of 360," so fans infer 173 for Leonard by subtraction. That 173 is an implied figure, never spoken on screen.

Is an IQ of 187 possible in real life?

Not on a modern professionally normed test. The WAIS-IV Full Scale IQ tops out at 160, about 4 standard deviations above the mean. Scores like 187 were only possible under the old ratio IQ formula from Terman's 1916 Stanford-Binet.

How rare would an IQ of 187 actually be?

A 187 is 5.8 standard deviations above the mean on an SD 15 scale. Computed from the normal model, that is roughly 1 in 300 million people, far too rare for any test to norm against.

Does Young Sheldon confirm Sheldon's IQ?

Yes. In Young Sheldon Season 6, Episode 14, "A Launch Party and a Whole Human Being" (2023), Sheldon says, "But I have an IQ of 187," keeping the spinoff consistent with The Big Bang Theory.

The takeaway

Sheldon's 187 is real canon and impossible measurement at the same time: a number the show is entitled to assert and no actual test could ever print. Real scores live on a humbler scale, reported within a defined range against actual human norms. If you are curious where you stand on that scale, the Reasoning and Intelligence Online Test from RIOT IQ is a modern, professionally normed assessment, and you can take the free RIOT IQ test online.
