The 117 meme: an advertisement, not a score
The earliest traceable appearance of "Rihanna's IQ is 117" is a spammy quiz-ad meme spreading across Facebook and banner ads around 2010, reposted to image boards by December of that year. The format was a challenge: beat Rihanna's score by taking the advertiser's quiz. No test, no psychologist, no source, just marketing copy with a plausible-sounding number. The 130 and the "estimates"
Later sites inflated the number. One listicle site puts her at 130 with no source or date; a brain-training site "estimates" 125 to 130 from her career success while marketing its own assessments; aggregators hedge with "120 to 140." Estimating an IQ from achievements is a category error, business success reflects taste, risk tolerance, networks, and work ethic that no IQ test measures. And the numbers cannot even agree: 117 to 140 spans more than a standard deviation, which no set of honest measurements of one person would produce.
