What Is Steve Wozniak's IQ?

Steve Wozniak's IQ was never formally documented; he said in 2021 he had "an over 200 IQ" as a child. Here is what that claim can and cannot mean today.

What Is Steve Wozniak's IQ?
Steve Wozniak's IQ has never been publicly documented. The only checkable statement comes from Wozniak himself, who said in a 2021 interview, "I was identified as a math wizard, I had an over 200 IQ when I was very young." That is a childhood recollection offered decades after the fact, with no named test, year, or score report behind it. This article looks at what the Apple co-founder actually said, why a childhood "200" cannot be read as a modern IQ score, and what the verified engineering record says about his mind.

What Wozniak has actually said

The verifiable source is an April 2021 interview with the publication Women Love Tech. Asked what he was like as a young boy, Wozniak answered that he was identified as a math wizard with "an over 200 IQ" when he was very young, adding that his parents never made a fuss about it and that he is grateful they did not.

The version that circulates online is more specific: an IQ of 200 or more, supposedly measured in sixth grade, stated as flat fact on celebrity-IQ listicles. None of those pages cites a test record. The story is often traced to his 2006 autobiography iWoz, but no school document, score report, or contemporaneous account has ever surfaced publicly. What exists is one man's memory of being flagged as exceptional in the late 1950s, which is worth taking seriously as a memory and nothing more.

Wozniak has told his origin stories consistently for decades, most recently at an August 2026 appearance in Sonoma, California, where he recounted teaching himself electronics in an era with no computer books. The IQ figure, though, appears in that single 2021 answer and nowhere else in the verifiable record.

Why a childhood "200" is not a modern IQ score

Modern IQ tests report a "deviation IQ": a score that marks your position within your age group, on a scale with a mean of 100 and a standard deviation of 15. Roughly two-thirds of people land between 85 and 115, and only about 2 percent score above 130. On that scale, 200 would sit more than six standard deviations above average, beyond what any current normed test can measure. Our article on the ceiling effect in IQ testing explains why extreme scores like this fall outside the range tests can support.

Mid-century school testing was a different animal. Scores then often came from "ratio IQ" instruments, which divided a child's mental age by chronological age and multiplied by 100. A young child performing several years ahead of schedule could post a very large ratio number, and such numbers run far higher than anything the modern deviation scale produces. So the honest reading is not that Wozniak misremembers or exaggerates. It is that a 1950s childhood "200" and a modern IQ score are different quantities, and one cannot be converted into the other.

There is also a general caution about childhood scores. The Lothian Birth Cohort study retested the same people on the same test at ages 11 and 90 and found a correlation of .54, or .67 after correcting for range restriction. Childhood ability is a strong signal, and still a snapshot rather than a lifetime certificate. None of this diminishes what Wozniak went on to do; it simply limits what any childhood number can prove about an adult.

What the verified record shows

The reason nobody seriously doubts Wozniak's ability has nothing to do with an IQ number. The documented record is remarkable on its own.

• Ham radio at age 10: He obtained a ham radio license when he was 10 years old and developed formulas for analog electronics as a kid, building homemade devices including a voltmeter, a ham radio, a calculator, and games.

• Self-taught engineering: "I worked my way up with science fair projects not assigned by my school's science teachers," he told a Sonoma audience in 2026. "There were no computers and no computer books, so I just taught myself and loved it."

• The Apple I: Wozniak alone designed the hardware, circuit board layouts, and operating system of the Apple I, completing the basic design by March 1976.

• The Apple II: He was the primary designer of the Apple II, which brought color graphics and built-in BASIC to personal computing.

• National Medal of Technology, 1985: President Reagan awarded Wozniak and Steve Jobs the country's highest technology honor, citing "their development and introduction of the personal computer which has sparked the birth of a new industry extending the power of the computer to individual users."

• A degree, eventually: He flunked out of the University of Colorado, built the Apple I with no degree at all, and completed his EECS degree at UC Berkeley in 1986, enrolled under the pseudonym Rocky Raccoon Clark.

The pattern with famous founders

Wozniak's case fits a pattern that runs through nearly every celebrity IQ claim: the achievements are documented, and the number is not. His co-founder is the clearest comparison, since Steve Jobs's IQ is likewise undocumented despite decades of confident internet estimates. The same holds for Bill Gates's IQ. Listicle sites fill the vacuum with invented or recycled numbers because a precise figure attracts clicks, and those figures then get quoted as fact.

Wozniak is actually the rare case with a first-person quote on record, which makes the honest framing easy to state: he says he tested above 200 as a child, no document confirms it, and the number would not mean what it seems to mean even if one did.

What a credible IQ claim requires

A meaningful modern IQ score needs three things: a test normed on a defined reference population, an administration under standard conditions, and a reported margin of error. That standard is worth remembering whenever a celebrity number crosses your feed, and it applies just as well to your own score.

If you are curious where you stand on a scale that actually supports interpretation, the RIOT IQ test at riotiq.com is normed on adults 18 and older and publishes the margin of error for each of its versions. Its free version takes about 8 minutes and reports a margin of 14.9 IQ points either way, while the full 52-minute, 15-subtest battery narrows that to 3.7 points. No version will hand anyone a 200, and that is precisely the point.

Frequently asked questions

What is Steve Wozniak's IQ?

No documented score exists. Wozniak himself said in 2021 that he "had an over 200 IQ" when he was very young, a self-reported childhood recollection with no test record behind it.

Did Wozniak really score 200 in sixth grade?

The sixth-grade detail is unsourced internet folklore. The only verifiable statement is his general recollection of testing above 200 "when I was very young."

Is an IQ of 200 even possible today?

Not on standard modern tests. On the deviation scale (mean 100, standard deviation 15), 200 lies beyond the measurable range of any current normed instrument.

Was Wozniak smarter than Steve Jobs?

Neither man has a documented IQ score, so no comparison is possible. Their documented strengths differed: Wozniak was the engineer, Jobs the product visionary.

What did Wozniak actually build?

He single-handedly designed the Apple I's hardware and operating system, was primary designer of the Apple II, and shared the 1985 National Medal of Technology with Jobs.
