Taking an IQ test and wondering which hemisphere is doing more of the heavy lifting is a natural follow-up question. Here's the direct answer: neither. The idea that people are dominantly left-brained or right-brained is one of the most thoroughly debunked myths in popular neuroscience. But — and this matters — it didn't come from nowhere. There is a kernel of real science underneath it that's worth understanding, because the truth is actually more interesting than the myth.
Where the Idea Came From
The left brain/right brain concept has a legitimate scientific origin. In the 1960s, neuroscientist Roger Sperry studied patients with severe epilepsy whose corpus callosum — the thick bundle of nerve fibers connecting the two hemispheres — had been surgically severed to control seizures. These "split-brain" patients gave researchers a rare window into what each hemisphere could do independently.
Sperry's findings were real: the two hemispheres did show functional differences. The left hemisphere appeared more involved in language production and logical sequencing. The right appeared more involved in spatial processing and recognizing faces. Sperry won the Nobel Prize in 1981 for this work.
The problem came next. Somewhere in the translation from careful neuroscience to bestselling pop psychology, nuance gave way to oversimplification. Complex, overlapping, contextual specialization became a clean binary: logical left brain versus creative right brain. And that binary — despite lacking solid scientific support — proved remarkably sticky.
What the Brain Imaging Evidence Actually Shows
In 2013, a landmark study put the myth to the test directly. University of Utah neuroscientists analyzed the resting-state brain scans of over 1,000 participants aged 7–29, examining which sides of the brain were more active across 7,000 brain regions. The result was definitive: there was no evidence whatsoever that individuals preferentially use one side of their brain over the other.
Some brain connections and networks were stronger in the left hemisphere. Others were stronger in the right. What Is True: Real Hemispheric Specialization
Debunking the dominant hemisphere myth doesn't mean the two hemispheres are identical. They're not. There is genuine lateralization — functional specialization between the two sides — but it's more nuanced and more integrated than the popular model allows.
Language is the clearest example. The left hemisphere does play the primary role in speech production and syntactic processing for most right-handed people. This is well established and traces back to Paul Broca's 19th-century observations. But scholars used to think that language processing only occurred in the left hemisphere, and now know that it occurs in both hemispheres. The right hemisphere handles intonation, pragmatics, and the emotional tone of speech — without which language is flat and hard to interpret. Mathematics is similar. The left hemisphere handles precise calculation. But the right brain helps with estimates and numerical comparisons. Both sides are active during mathematical reasoning — the distinction is in which operations each side leads, not whether the other contributes. Motor control is the one area where the popular model comes close to the truth. The right side of the brain controls movement on the left side of the body, and the left side controls the right. But this is a specific anatomical feature of neural wiring, not a statement about personality or cognitive style.
The Creativity Network Lives in Both Hemispheres
One of the most important specific findings that dismantles the left-brain/right-brain model concerns creativity — the domain most commonly attributed to the right brain.
Neuroscience research reveals that there is an "innovation circuit" in the brain that supports exploration, divergent thinking, and creativity — but it lives in both sides of the brain. This network — often called the default mode network — activates when the mind wanders, generates novel associations, and engages in imaginative thinking. It spans both hemispheres and draws on distributed neural resources that no single hemisphere could support alone. The opposing circuit — the fronto-parietal attention network — supports focused, goal-directed cognitive work. It also spans both hemispheres. When one network is activated, the other is suppressed, which is why sustained creative work requires periods of mental wandering, and focused task performance requires suppressing the imaginative default mode. Neither is a left-brain or right-brain phenomenon. Both are whole-brain phenomena.
Why the Myth Won't Die
If the science is this clear, why does the left brain/right brain idea persist in schools, job interviews, personality frameworks, and self-help books?
Several reasons converge. The myth persists because it contains a kernel of truth — the brain does show hemispheric specialization for certain functions. That kernel makes it feel credible. People also find it intuitive and useful as a shorthand for describing thinking styles — "I'm more of a logical thinker" or "I'm more creative" — even if the underlying neuroscience doesn't map onto two discrete hemispheres. The education and business industries have also invested heavily in left/right brain frameworks. Countless workshops, personality assessments, team-building exercises, and leadership programs are built on the dominant hemisphere model. Dismantling it requires dismantling a substantial infrastructure of products and curricula that are commercially motivated to maintain the idea. As Wharton professor Michael Platt notes, leaders who rely on debunked myths like this one miss opportunities to apply what neuroscience actually shows about creativity, decision-making, and team performance.
What This Means for How You Think About Yourself
The practical implication of the research is direct: categorizing yourself as a "left-brained" or "right-brained" thinker is a false constraint. You are neither — you are using both hemispheres, cooperatively and simultaneously, for virtually everything you do.
More importantly, the fact that certain brain areas develop stronger neural connections based on practice means that cognitive strengths and weaknesses reflect your history of engagement, not fixed hemispheric wiring. A person who describes themselves as "not creative" is describing a pattern of engagement, not a fixed property of their right hemisphere. A person who says they're "not analytical" is describing a similar pattern — not a left-brain deficiency. This connects directly to what rigorous cognitive assessment actually measures. A professional IQ battery doesn't categorize you as left-brained or right-brained. It measures specific cognitive abilities — verbal comprehension, visual-spatial reasoning, working memory, processing speed, fluid reasoning — that draw on distributed neural networks spanning both hemispheres, and it reports your profile across those domains with precision that a hemisphere label could never provide.

The left-brained versus right-brained dichotomy is a myth — but a myth built on real science that got simplified beyond recognition on its way into popular culture. The actual finding from Sperry's split-brain research is that the two hemispheres show some functional differences. The conclusion that should have followed is that both hemispheres work together in ways that make the dominant hemisphere concept meaningless as a personality type.
The brain you have is whole, integrated, and continuously responsive to what you ask of it. No quiz can divide it into two clean categories. What a proper cognitive assessment can do is tell you where your specific cognitive strengths actually lie — not which hemisphere you favor, but which domains of ability are most developed in your individual profile.
